1 Attachment(s)
The FV-4101 Charioteer was exported in small numbers to Finland, Austria, Jordania and Lebanon. (some captured and used by the Palestinians)
Who can tell me the exact numbers used by these countries and the years of service. Also photographs and other data are very welcome.

greetings Hans Heesakkers

"The British supplied enough for two Jordanian squadrons in 1954 (24 tanks) of the 3rd Tank Regiment. Jordon, when it received Centurions, subsequently sold some or all to Lebanon. The PLO in turn picked up some of these when the Lebanese army disintegrated during the civil war and used these against the Israelis in Southern Lebanon in 1976."

Reportedly, by 2003 the Austrian Army still used Charioteer (plus Centurion and M60A1) turrets on static fortified positions.

Question: where and when was your photo taken?

Hanno

The picture was taken in South Lebanon around 1982. It shows a Charioteer (in Plo colours ??) as a war monument. That is all info I have got.

charioteer

Hans, do you have the Charioteer article in Wheels and Tracks 60?

This article says: "Austria 80, Finland 16, Lebanon 19, Jordan 47 (Austrian and Finnish sources state 56 and 38 for their respective countries: were there any transferes between them?)"

By 1973, Lebanon had probably 60 (their own shipment, plus second hand Jordanian).

Hth,
Nuyt

Here you may find some photos of the Charioteer:

as well as

Try reading the article in the "Wheels and Tracks". It is really superb.

Best regards,
Piotr

Charioteer in Lebanon, obviously no longer in service, pictured by Dutch UNIFIL soldier.
