Chevrolet C60 from 1941
 

The attached photo shows a 1940-1941 Chev C60 No.12 Cab with an early style steel body, that I have seen in WW2 era photos very occasionally.

There's not much I know about the rear body except that it is quite early as it still replicates the British Army rounded wheel arch, that the same body was fitted to both Chev and Fords, and that it was fitted to Fords 100,000th military vehicle (as shown in a photo from the late Bill Gregg).

The length of the rear body makes it look like a C30 but I'm told it was a 3 tonner. I guess the standard tyres for such a production vehicle were 10.50x16 or perhaps 10.200x16. Its hard to know with preserved CMPs.

This vehicle was fully restored about three or four years ago and sold off Milweb in 2017. It now resides in Norfolk, UK.

Beautiful truck. I'd suggest 30cwt based not so much on the short wheelbase (there were short wheelbase 60cwts) but the hub flange on the front axle. It's scalloped instead of bulged which is a tell tail indication of a 15cwt/30cwt chassis.

Here is a shot of my 1941 Pat 12 C60L which was built with 16 wheels the photo shows it with 16 inch wheels on front and 20 inch rears. During the transition from the small wheels 10:50x16 originals to 11:00x20s.

Looking at the truck you posted you can see that it had the smaller brake drums need to fit the 16 inch wheel.

Telling the difference between C30 and C60 is difficult lacking the data plate. One of the best and easiest difference to spot is C30 did not have brake boosters and C60 did.

But once these trucks got into the hands of rebuild yards the mixing of parts took on a whole new meaning so most any combination was possible.

What info are you looking for? The body is a rare 3C1 body and the truck was restored by Howard Wade. There is a resto thread here in MLU:

I believe there used to be one of these bodies on a truck in Norway....but I think it sold to the UK a long time ago. There also used to be a cut down body here in Holland......might still be there.

Guys,

I have just found a wartime photo I was looking for of the same vehicle rear body type, though I guess it might be a F60.

Its not particularly common. I was wondering if the preserved vehicle has a real serial number. The wartime one starts L1984.... so I guess L17.... etc is not too wild.

Details of the exact body style ref would be greatly appreciated

Are you talking the wheels or the drums? Both 16" and 20" rims with fit either the 15" or 16" drums. The 16" (ie. 60cwt) front drum is bulged and the 15" front drum (ie. 15cwt and 30 cwt) were scalloped. My understanding is a 30cwt is basically a 134" wheelbase 15cwt (with 15" front drums) and a 60cwt can come in short (134") or regular (158") versions but had the bulged 16" front drum. Of course differential ratios were different as well.
