WW2 Ford V8 engs [239"]in post war Fords

Working on my '48 Mercury 114X I learned that the replacement eng in it is a '41 [239"] military version. It has the trapizoid coolant passage, relieved block deck and the third oil port in its rear area. Casting ID C59. So I checked my three other Canadian engines [cores] and they are all identical in markings and have third oil port. One of those engines was the original in a '48 Mercury M-57 Pu with 65,000 miles and from B. C. Provincial government ownership. I wonder if Ford didn't just use up the 'extra' military engines in its post-war production? and maybe as parts replacement engs? Dave
