Jeep trailers - are they worth that?

When they pop up around here at $800-1100, they sell quickly. When guys try for $1500, they do seem to sell eventually, but not quickly. When they get up around the $2500 mark, the sales seem to stagnate. And those are Cdn dollars, not USD like the one Tony has linked to.
I bought 28 of them when they were released for $320 each (taxes in). I sold them off for $600 each, and never paid a penny to advertise. In hind sight, I should have sat on them for a year or two and doubled the price, but it was a quick purchase and a quick sale. Nothing wrong with that. |
worth vs value

What we are seeing is a secondary effect of 4x4 expedition touring buying up surplus M-series trailers as foundations for rugged camping support trailers. The Canadian ones were just the last good condition batch of small trailers suitable for cutting off 80% of the original fittings and accessories, and fabricating up with kitchen sliders, battery charger panels, small fridges, even tented sleeping platforms. The results look fantastic, but add another ton/tonne to the weight being moved along the trails. |
FMC 1945 No.4 trailer price
Wow! I must be really way out of touch with Aust prices if an unrestored, modified 8-cwt No.4 trailer with modified tail lamp brackets/modern tail lights, a spare wheel mounting under the rear, no spacer in the towing eye and a badly bent rear top edge is selling for $3,600! :giveup

I would think that would be a reasonable price for a finished restored example Mike, so probably top end but when you think jeeps are bringing upwards of $22k nowadays, the must have accessory trailer is not going to be seen for $750 anymore.

Hanno!!!
Why didn't you tell us about that auction? Didn't know about it at all, and I could have gone very silly there. Not to worry, there were others who did so in my absence: https://davidgsmith.hibid.com/catalo...gilgandra-nsw/ See Lots 222, 223, 225, 226, 227, 228, 440, 509, 510. |
Going a little off the topic of trailers here: Had a look at that auction. First I saw a demilled mills bomb sold for $1100 AUD. WOW I thought. Then I see the next one went for $1500. Then the third one went for $1700.
If anyone want to trade a mills bomb for a 1/4 ton trailer, I am happy to oblige. I'll even throw in a second mills bomb to cover shipping. Here in Canada, a nice Mills no36 is asking around $400, and usually very slow to sell at that price. But I have noticed online auctions recently where firearms parts and accessories are selling for ridiculous prices. Perhaps the results of covid and being housebound for much of the time. That, and the gun and militaria shows have not been happening. |

As it happens, I only saw some screenshots of results passing by on FB. By golly, the man did amass a lot in his life! I see some prices reflecting the laws of demand and supply - many bidders resulting in a high price and the other way round. But there were some bargains were to be had: Ford Blitz project for 400 bucks - https://davidgsmith.hibid.com/lot/89...q=&ref=catalog Bedford for 10 bucks! Must be worth more as scrap - https://davidgsmith.hibid.com/lot/89...q=&ref=catalog With the Bofors and 25-pdr it looks to me Australia is catching up with markets in other geographies. 25-pdr
The 25-pdr may be a British carriage with North Africa/Mid East service. I hope whoever bought it does some research before stripping it down to rebuild.
Quite a good price especially given how much is missing. Mike |

Still available
This is still available , believe this trailer was owned by late VMVC member Bill W. The seller ( Bill's son in law ) has a few other jeep bits for sale including a rusty Willys block, probably spares for Bill's jeep.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/31348080...AAAOSwvKhgaqe8 Don't know what became of Bill's GAZ 67 , the GAZ was captured in Korea by Australian troops. Bill restored the GAZ . Bill mentioned to me: he approached the Russian consulate in Melbourne and asked if they could supply a manual. A manual duly arrived but the document was on microfilm ! Bill was joking, ASIO would get involved and he was thinking they , ASIO, would open a file on him. |
Gaz-67b is in USA
Mike, the GAZ-67B is in the National Museum of Military Vehicles in Dubois, WY, USA. I have no idea how it got an Australian Government Movable Cultural Heritage Export Permit.
Bill's trailer is one of the rarer models: a No.3 model built by Charles Hope, plus being an ex-PMG trailer, the top edge under that timber top should be pristine, not bent and distorted. Mike |
