Please ID towing pintle
 

I picked up a pintle recently. While it almost looks the same as the pintle on my F15A, the levers to open it are different (besides being bent as you can see).

It is marked "GW 1943" and it looks to match the "towing pintle" drawing from a British trailer parts list.

Can anyone confirm it is British?

Standard W.D. hook on spring drawbar gear

It turns out it must be a standard British W.D. towing hook as fitted on a spring drawbar to many trucks.

I have noticed the different hitches on some of the artillery limbers at work.

As compared to the British ones, the Canadian ones merely skipped having to heat and press the ends of the two handles.

I also have a hitch out in the shed that is fabricated rather than cast.

Indeed, these seem to be fitted to some types of British trailers as a rear towing hitch. They may be of a lower rating than the cast ones, I reckon.

Standards - every one needs theirs
 

So many variations for something you'd think was one-and-done.

But, yes weights and forces are not the same between any two vehicle types.

I believe that the fabricated / welded ones are post war British. I don't know if they are of a lower rating than the cast ones but I have certainly seen them on various makes of 3 ton trucks built in the '50s.

That’s a Canadian hook because the lever is made from round stock.

I found this Pintle, Spring and Bracket at the rubbish tip today when dropping off the garbage, and well, it kinda fell into the trailer on the way out. :wacko: The pintle lever is free moving and works, but is a little tight. I could only find the one bracket, despite looking for the other.

The general arrangement is from a Commonwealth vehicle, but it is not CMP. The bracket has the remnant of Deep Bronze Green and Olive Drab paint, so is definitely ex-Mil, and the taillight bulb is 6V, so that went straight into spares.

But what is the Pintle from? I seem to recall a thread on a similar Pintle Hook, but could not find it by search. Was it maybe from a Ford Marmon-Herrington Truck?

Years ago I purchased a C15 Cab 13 4x2, Blitz from G P Motors in Bairnsdale that had been their tow truck for many many years and it was fitted with the same pintle hitch, spring and brackets. It was fitted with that hitch from new, so that is your answer. I am looking for a photo of it, but with 1,000's of photos to go through, it might take me a while. Cheers Rick.

I have never seen one of these hooks in the UK in 50 years of playing with MVs so possibly it is an Australian LP design ? It is certainly not as heavy duty as the standard British style though.

Same type hook arrangement as fitted to my C60S Cab 13, 1942.

I've also had a message from a member, who has said they have the style fitted to a Chev Truck, so along with my memory of a post showing one fitted to an Australian Marmon-Herrington LP Tractor, I think we will go with Dave Herbert's suggestion that this is an Australian Local Pattern of Pintle Hook.
