Were is the serial number?

A few years ago we were given a 1970 Jeep , M38A1 CDN 2 and we would like to put it on the road.
Our problem is we have not found the serial number or the serial number plate.
Is there a place on the Jeep that it could be engraved?
Maybe on the frame or any other places?

Jeep serial number

My CDN 3 has two data plates. One on the dash panel and one on the forward angle of the right rear wheel arch. Am not aware of another location or somewhere on the frame. Someone who's taken theirs down to bits may be able to advise.

But speaking of 'getting on the road', my 1953 MCI trailer never had a civilian registration and I want to follow your footsteps to getting it papered and plated.

Unfortunately, the only two locations for the S/N are the plates as mentioned by Terry. There is no stamping on the frame. Do you have any evidence of the CFR for that jeep? The CFR can be cross-referenced to the S/N.

Frame numbers

I seem to remember someone restoring an M38 several years ago and they found the cfr number stamped on the left frame rail between the grille and bumper. It’s worth a look. You may be able to use the number as the serial number, the ministry probably wouldn’t even question it.

The CFRs were not stamped onto the frame in the late 60s/early 70s. That seems to have been a trait from the late 50s or very early 60s.

Best bet is, as someone else mentioned, if there ie evidence of the CFR on the dash, that can be used to get the serial number. But otherwise, it was either the small plate behind the passenger seat on the wheelwell, or the serial number on the data plate on the dash behind the chicken bar.
