Mk.4 plate

A 'Plates, Zero Line Readings, Mk.4' shown, part number FL10716, which I think is post-WW2.

Were these also used on the L5 105mm?

105mm L5

Tony,

I don't remember seeing a mounting block on the L5 pack howitzer shield, and the weapon's introduction into Aust service coincided with some major changes to Aust artillery fire control and laying procedures and instrumentation. Also, the L5 was often operated without the shield mounted. So I doubt the zero line plate shown here is applicable, but cannot confirm that 100%.

These plates (ww2 version) were fitted to a block on the left side of the front trail for the 75mm Pack Howitzer M1A1 on Carriage M8.

A very similar plate was added to the Canadian M2A1 (later designated C1) howitzer. Rather than a wooden block, there was a metal bracket added. The same plate was also affixed to the Canadian M109 self propelled howitzer.

Gun ARN 02-090 in Puckapunyal Museuem shows the wooden block on the top left shield (facing from Crew side).

Gun ARN 02-087 (private collection) shows a different format plaque (later than as introduced, perhaps?).

And yes, they are much more fun Sans Sheild.

Thanks

Thanks Tony, just goes to show I should not rely on a failing memory! Different design of plate, of course, but essentially similar information.

Mike
