Felt Washer I/D
 

Hi Team, has anyone come across this part, it is an Industrial heavy felt washer , about 3&1/2" in dia outside by about 2&1/2" inside and 1/2" thick. I think this is CMP related? but not sure in the steering or in the brake hub parts?....any ideas?, Thanks Andrew.

The seal looks like the one used in Morris Commercial rear axle hubs. Size sounds similar.

The CMP 15 cwt trailers use a similar style felt washer as a grease seal on their axle. I haven't found my notes on size yet to confirm or deny fit.

.... there is such a felt seal in the pinion of the rear axle....mine was sent to me by a chap in the UK...made of white felt....... and I sure was grateful but can't remember his name...... did save my bacon as my rear axle really needed one.

Custom gasket shop in Ottawa refused to cut me one for my lack of a garage or technician license..... I tried using sharpened section of exhaust pipe and the hydraulic press.... no success....... the cutting edge of the pipe would need to rotate to slice the felt fiber....luckily the felt washer arrived in time.

In the early parts manual the felt is not shown....but in the 1945 C15a parts book it is referred #5.469 to as "packing, pinion flange seal...... no dimensions are shown.....#1804415 and later 1810647......

Hi Bob, I think this seal is too big for a CMP pinion at nearly 90mm O/D.
I think Richard is on track with where this seal goes , I do have a few of these,
so will keep looking into it, Thanks for the replies, cheers Andrew.

I just checked the ID of a spare 4675 Retainer- bearing and pinion oil seal, and the OD of the 4848 flange- drive pinion and deflectors assy, for my Ford F15-A.

The ID of the pocket where the felt spacer and bearing goes is 3-7/16". (OD of felt)
The OD of the Flange- drive pinion is 2-3/8". (ID of felt)

In my part list it is listed as: 1804415 Retainer pinion and oil seal (C01Q-4809) GM and Ford design front axle (felt).

Surprisingly it is not listed in the rear axle parts list but 4809 is shown in the rear axle diagram.

Similar dimensions to the one discussed here but not exactly the same as my measurements make Andrew's 1/16" larger OD and 1/8" larger ID.

I remember years ago replacing the felts in both diffs but from memory they were only about 1/4" thick. Perhaps were just crushed down to that size.

That felt seal is correct for a GMC CCKW rear wheel bearing inner oil
seal, for trucks with Timken Split Type axles.
