Attilio,

You are correct.

Its census number is L4696836, part of Contract No. V4866, L4696419 to 4698418 Austin K5 Anti Tank Portee.

regards,
Richard

Can anyone identify this 3-tonner? It looks like a Dodge to me. The location was Egypt of course, 1947? My father was there at the time, and whereas the author of the article in VINTAGE ROADSCENE mentions initial use of ex-WD Bedord QLTs, Dad's RAMC unit [11th Field Ambulance] used their own QLs for staff transport so he never came across CABs.

Manual

There is currently an Austin K5 workshop manual for sale on e-bay. It lists a steel body and timber body version of the Portee, as well as GS versions. It may contain pics of the different body types? No connection with the seller, no commission from e-bay, blah, blah...

Current assignment

As Military Editor [so I have just been told] of VINTAGE ROADSCENE, I have been tasked with researching & writing about CABs and the post-war use of British 4 x 4 trucks, usually QLs post-mandate expiry in Egypt. There is evidence that CMPs were used yet but we know that the new Israelis used CMPs on the new Jerusalem road-building project. I assumed that these were left behind or stolen before the Brits pulled out in Egypt.

Enjoy this one from my dad''s album, Jaffa 1948 with ex-WD 1941-on Chev.
