ANZAC Day

The BBC news reminded me last night that today was ANZAC Day. I asked the "veterans" of my European history course if they remembred what today was -- and some of them did!

I googled ANZAC and came up with this quote from the last Australian survivor, Tom Matthews:

"If youve got a good enough reason to live, you just don't die."

He got to 100; I guess his reasons were good enough.

You lot Down Under, raise at least one Tooey's or Castlemaynes in their memory for me.

The last surviving veteran from the Galipoli campaign was Alec Campbell, who died at the age of 103 in 2002. See http://www.anzacs.org/campbell.html for more info.

Thanks, Tony

The wording on the article was confusing. It sounded like Tom Matthews was the last surviving ANZAC who landed on the first day. I did see an article on Campbell while I was searching.

Still, the memory must be maintained. Some of us fight the fight in the classroom. It would be easier if parents fought alongisde us.
