Generator questions

HI everyone

SInce the return of the somtimes warm weather Ive be able to do more work on my carrier.

Im looking at trying to get my generator rewired from 6 to 12 volts. Ive got it with a mechanic right now but he has had no luck in finding someone who can change it for me. Does anyone know of a place I could take it within Southern Ontario to get this done. The only other option would be to re-install it but not hook it up. That way I would just have to keep an eye on the battery and make sure it doesn't run out.

Any suggestions would be most gratefull.

Jordan, my buddy at Guelph Auto Electric can handle your generator with no problem at all. He has done a lot of work on my MV equipment and their shop specializes in all automotive, marine, farm and industrial electric equipment.
They do quite a bit of work on vintage stuff and do get a kick out of it (they're good too)

HI Bob

For now ive just got it repainted and installed on my carrier in its 6volt configuration.

Thanks for the offer but I think i'll keep mine and get it switched over to 12volt at a later time. Ive got a really big 12 volt battery powering the Ucarrier and it ran for about 4 months without recharging.

Unfourtunatly I wont be able to got the the swap meet. Ive got to work and this is what pays for my hobby.

Thanks again
Jordan

Jordan I dont know what type of generator you have .Some generators can be changed from 6v to 12v by changing the field coils in the generator, (along with the regulator as well) 6volt wiring can handle 12 volts (but not the other way around) What i mean here is that some manufacturers make both 6v and 12v. Your armature is special because of the drive coupling, so you wouldnt want to change that. Fortunately the armature works in both 6v and 12v. So what you hve to do is find a 12volt generator of the same make to take the 12v field coils from. Then it all looks original. Maybe you cant do this, but it works for English carriers fitted with a Lucas generator. Hope this might help.
