? Pat 12 Door Hinge & Spring Paint ?

OK I’ve got questions:

What do the hinges of at Pattern 12 look like when they are not bent?

It would appear that the top and bottom door hinges could be the same, but all four of mine have completely different shapes.

How much space is there between the door and the door post?

Was there any sort of door gasket?

Next area

What have people used (successfully) to repaint the springs?

I had to disassemble mine because of rust between the leafs, some leafs look like they may have been painted with a thin OB. Others look more like they had been greased with a blackish coating.

I’m thinking of repainting with POR-15.

Doors ajar......

Hi Phil

Searched through my pictures but it seems I have never been facinated much by door hinges... I have enlarged what I could find and will take some pictures of my disassembled doors hinges for you if you wish.....

Any ways.... from everything I have seen on mine or restored vehicles no door seals ever existed..... if others have info please pipe in...... God only knows where you will ever find door hinges for a cab 11/12 except maybe Dirk in Holland.

Spring wise....... I have been considering and pondering the same issue. My plan are to degrease and acid etch as per POR process and spray on a light coat of POR Gray....... let it dry 24 hours..... top coat with the new spray can paint binder.... which I believe can be sprayed on over the POR Gray much easier than the thick polyurethane baby blue binder covering previuosly used ans still carried. The advantage of the poly baby blue binder coat is that it is thick... self leveling and multicoats can be applied over previously POR coated metal particularly the frame when it is sligthly pocked marked with rust pimples. The poly will fill in monor imperfection. The new stuff they are now promoting is specifically intended as a binder coat and will not fill depressions nor is it sandable.

Any ways.... thin coat of POR... your choice of color... thin coat of binder spray..... multi coat of OD....... things to watch here is to prevent the POR, binder coat and paint to seep in to much between the leaves... particularly the POR which is like a crazy glue.....

Let us know how you make out.... if you mess up I will change my plans...hahaha

As a point of interest, I have done my wheels and frame with POR and I am very pleased.... troublesome to use but very resistant to abrasion..... highly toxic in spray form safe otherwise. Tires have been mounted on POR wheels top coated with Gillespie OD and they came back perfect from the rather rude/crude/dude at the rural tractor tire shop I am using.

Interesting to note the inside of the doors

Interesting how the construction of the doors varies as to some have inside skins and others don’t as well as the location of the door strap on some the door strap is up at the cross member while others it is down between the cross bracing.

I think that I will go the Por-15 route, I plan to use the new tie-coat primer. Then primer filler on the body to allow for filling of the rust pitting.

The other approach to the springs I had considered was coat them with Cosmoline then reassemble and dip the entire spring.

NOS doors

Hi Phil
I have a pair of NOS doors which are minus the locks, but they do have loose hinges AND more interestingly, the weatherstrip is intact and in near perfect condition.

Thing came in most helpful when photographing these parts. You can seen the profile of the rubber weatherstrip here.

I've published them on a dot Mac account

Here's the hinge

In years gone by I used a graphite based paint-like substance on a set of 4wd springs. This was made made for Railway use in dry lubricating the rails on a set of points (trans:Track Switch?). It totally transformed the springs from stiff, squeaky and streaked with rust to supple, quiet and a nice graphite-black colour. Unfortunately, this stuff is no longer produced as it was found to be carcinogenic or ozone depleting or something. The vanilla-safe replacement now has an outdoor lifespan of about 2 weeks:( !

Hi Phil,

Since I restored quit a bunch of cmp's, I figured out that it doesn't make sense to coat or even lubricate the leafs!!!

Imagine in wartime that they lubricated all the leaf springs, by the way the spring behaviour doesn't act the way as it was designed for, as it was lubricated.
It needs to have some kind of "stiffness" for its purpose, so my advise: just paint them and put them back together.

We have NOS leaf springs without lubricants, coatings or whatever, just good old olive drap, that tells enough I think.

Cheers,

Stefan

Squeaky hinges...

Hi Phil

Here are some pictures of my hinges... in the raw as is format...

Notice the hinges are rivited to the door frame..... and the body part of the hing is screwed in the vertical piece of the door frame.

From what I can see they are unisex and can be mounted either side.

I do not believe seeing retaining straps on my doors???? will have to look again even for screw holes.

I am surprised to learn that they did have a rubber sealer strip..... I assume glued in place. Thanks Keith for the close up it will help find a substitute........ could you post some measurement of the cross section pleeeeze.

As usual the pictures will come one at a time.....

Thanks guys

Thanks Bob, Stefan, Keith, Tony and Mike all of the photos and information are great I've save off all of the photos hope that I have your approval to use them on my web site.

Strangely it is the most bent of my hinges that it is closest to the pictures Keith supplied the NOS hinge. The other 3 are almost “U” shaped with no offset.

Are the top and bottom hinges identical?

Phil ... you are free to use my pictures any way you wish... no credit.... the little digital camera and the ACDSee software get all the credits.

Besides... it is for the greater good of the CMP hobby.

Let me know if you fins a souce for the rubber weather strip
