Photo research costs
Reading the thread on "Ballards Morris" I see that there are concerns about costs of photos from museum repositories.
Perhaps we could have a thread on institutions world-wide and their policies on providing photos for both personal use and for publishing. I'll start. All prices are based on photos that are out of copyright or are otherwise copyright free. Library & Archives Canada. Personal or commercial use - no charge (cost of reproduction only) Canadian War Musuem Personal use - no charge (cost of reproduction only) Commercial use - based on whether image is B&W or colour, cover or inside, print run, and Canada or world-wide. For example a B&W image for inside pages, Canadian distribution, 1,000 copies of the publication is CDN$75.00 Bovington Tank Museum Personal use - no charge (cost of reproduction only) Commercial use - I don't have all of the details but I havve recently been charged 25 Pounds per image. This included the cost of the print. |
AWM costs
The Australian War Memorial has an excellent database of photographs, film and other items. Here's the cost for photographs - there is a $29.70 fee to provide a large scan and here is the table of costs for use:

All prices are in $A. |
