desert boxes on MK I carriers
i have a pile of box holders for my MK I carrier that i was told were issued to special carriers used in the desert. they look like they would hold 2 x 1 gal POL cans each. i also have some holders that look like they would hold .303 boxes. i will try to have pics posted in the morning. thanks.

The top bracket is for the MkI* carrier and it holds a metal tin which in turn holds boxes of .303 ammo. It is fixed at 45 degree angle bolted to mudguard and side armour in the rear compartment behind the driver about 12" back from the bulkhead. The tin is held in place by a leather strap and buckle which passes through the channel which can be seen in your photo. The other one I'm still scratching my head about! Nigel |
Water can racks

Dave, those racks are indeed for the water cans on desert equipped carriers. They sit on the rear deck just left and right of the battery box. When you say a pile, do you have a pair for sale so I don't have to make a set?
The angled rack fits the ammunition box like this, forward of the wireless set. Like Nigel, I'm scratching my head on the other bracket. It doesn't in any way fit under the drivers seat, being that never-before-seen shield for the stearing linkages? |
thanks bruce, i now know what 3 of the 5 brackets go (dbl POL cans on the rear, and the ammo can bracket) just have to find out where the other 2 go. thanks

HI Dave
Coudl you post a few more pictures of the second item in the first photo. Maybe from another angle we could identify it. |

Are you talking about the large cover which is located in front of the steering column or about the smaller cover which bolts just in front of the division plate under the drivers seat? Seems like everyone around here (except me, for now) has the larger cover, but the only one of the smaller ones I have ever seen is with my carrier. My hull is in the low 2000 range, so I thought that perhaps this was an item that was dropped later in production. (edited to add) The bracket that is in the photo looks locally made. (and it does not resemble either linkage protector). The strap loops on the side are not like any I have ever seen on a carrier production piece. |
there is no TL no. on the item but the carrier seems to have been built in 41 due to many of the other parts being stamped "41" on them, and im finding out from Rob that this carrier has MANY early parts and pices on it.

I may have found where that flat bracket goes on the Mk1 carriers. Compare to the photo below. The carrier is from the Saumur mesuem in France. It looks like the bracket is used to keep possibly the tarp off of the exhaust shield.
Dave does the size of the item compare to what you have? |
