Olds Sherman

This is an Isherman, an Israeli converted Sherman that the legion bought from the states after it was brought in from Israel. The legion director told me that they drove it off the truck and up on to the platform. THis would have been in 1996 approx. So it was still working fine at that time.

Whilst we're looking at Middle Eastern Sherman variants I enclose a shot of what appears to be one fitted with a French turret. Shot a little blurred as I've cropped it out of a much large panoramic photo. Taken in Egypt in the mid 90's in the Cairo Citadel (worth visiting if you've seen enough pyramids). The tank was labeled as a trophy from the Yom Kippur war. It therefore comes from the same source as the Isherman.

Yes it has a dozer blade - this was a very crude field conversion done by the Egyptians during the Suez conflict to allow clearing of rubble in streets of Cairo during air raids. There are no hydraulics! Once the blade is down it stays down until the crew can dismount and manually push it up.

The Sherman Turret is one modified by the Israelis. They did what ever it took to modify them to fit larger guns. Recast turret weights for gun counterbalance and even cast their own turrets in the last vrsions. I have a book on Israeli Shermans and the variants are staggering.
