Imagine my surprise...

...When I turned on the news at 1730 last night and saw my daughter's townhouse surrounded by SWAT team members. The problem was in the next townhouse over. My ex, daughter and son were home at the time, and SWAT used their foyer for coordination and communication. Holy crap. I'm sure glad it didn't turn ugly.

I admit to having a cold shot of adrenaline to the heart when I recognized the house, until I got them on the phone.

Toronto family held at knifepoint
By JONATHAN JENKINS, TORONTO SUN

Three generations of a Scarborough family were held at knifepoint yesterday for almost an hour before police persuaded their attacker to surrender.

"The estranged husband came over and he's not allowed to be here," Toronto police Det. Martin Woodhouse alleged.

"He threatened her, her mother and her 2 1/2-year-old daughter with a knife -- actually two knives."

Members of the Emergency Task Force coaxed the suspect out of the townhouse near Military Trail and Neilson Rd. around 2:30 p.m.

LOCKED HIMSELF IN

"He wasn't barricaded. He just locked the door and wouldn't let anybody else in," Woodhouse said.

"We just talked him out and he came out."

Relatives of the family involved declined to comment after the suspect was driven off in the back of a police cruiser.

The victims were also taken to 42 Division to give statements but were not injured, Woodhouse said.

Police were called to the home around 1:30 p.m.

It's not known what charges would be laid, but Woodhouse alleged the man had breached a restraining order by showing up at the home.

No names were released.

Not to make light of the situation...

Have the Liberals started beaking off about banning knives?

Glad to hear that your family is OK.

Geoff I'm glad everything turned out well and that were

Geoff...was this Grace, Sean and (dunno your daughter's name)?

I read that article in today's Toronto Sun, but, of course, made no connection.

Hi Jon,

Geoff hasn't seen this post yet or he would have answered ... and he's asleep at the moment so I thought I'd relieve your wondering... just to be a nice little Ma yappy. G. was basically only logged in long enough to approve several newusers today but should be on tomorrow.

YES ... this was Grace's and Ashley's place, and Sean, staying in town for now, also happened to be there for this event. The cops actually setup and used their (Grace's) townhouse to monitor and talk with the bezerker i believe! I think the other side of Grace's wall is where the event happened. Thank god that all turned out with no one hurt. And thank god the guy only had knives and not guns ... thinking if he'd shot, bullets could have gone through the wall!!!

I'm so happy all is well ... but everyone over there must be really frazzled by this.

The Yapster is factually correct... Grace, Shawn and Ashley were there at the time; Shawn was kipping out in the basement recroom and woke up to find the house infested with heavily-armed SWAT guys! They wouldn't let him try out their H&K MP-5s though... :D
