When I moved to Texas I thought that's it, I'll never see or hear another piper unless I go back to B.C. I'm pleased to admit that I was wrong! Surprisingly, the Gaelic influence has spread world-wide even to the Lone Star state. There are two large Gaelic festivals held here every year complete with Highland dance and Pipe competitions. The younger brother of a friend of mine; Robbie McCallion once won the competition and was the Texas State Champion. He has since travelled to Edinburgh to compete there and will be performing with the Chieftains during their upcoming visit to Fort Worth. I pointed out to him that they were Irish, but he didn't mind! So, I'm lucky, I can get my pipe fix on a regular basis. My love of the pipes must be from my paternal Grandmother who was Welsh. That's the closest we came to Scotland. :salute: :drunk: CHIMO! |
haggis + scotch whiskey
Listen you Texas longhorn.Today along with the Pipe Major of our RCAF esteemed pipe band,I was privileged to have both the haggis AND a single malt scotch whiskey called and I quote "The Antiquary".It is not for sale in Canada. The only way to obtain a bottle here is to order it or have a good friend travelling in the UK bring it back to you.Don't and I repeat DON'T let this fine elixor of Scotland get anywhere near WATER.It has an affinity adverse to water.Let me put it this way. This stuff is sooo smooooth,it'll be a half hour before it arrives at the destination, and by this time you'd probably have had three more drams :salute:

"The Antiquary"! You're a lucky man! I can smell the burning peat from here. I hope the Pipe Major not only had on his kilt and sporran, but like a proper Scotsman, had his dirk secreted upon his body. They say a true aficiando of "usquebaugh" can tell where it was distilled by it's smokiness. I can only aspire to such knowledge. And, yes, when it comes to whiskey, NEATness counts! I do however enjoy a fine cigar alongside a dram of usquebaugh, the two go hand-in-hand so well. Try this if you haven't already...dip the non-lit end of a really good cigar in your glass of whiskey periodically as you smoke it. The taste is truly sublime!...and if you happen to have a little haggis to complement the other two............... :salute: :drunk: CHIMO! |
