Morris Light Reconnaissance Car
 

Hey there, i'm currently building a website about the Morris Light Reconnaissance Car, i'm hoping it will have lots of photos and information. Just wondered if anyone here had any photos and information I could use? I'm particularly looking for who used it, when and where, and also photos of surviving ones, and details of where any are.

I took this back in 2004 at Duxford in the Land Warfare hall.

Cheers, Les it is alright to use the photos you sent? I'd give you credit as well for them. The first photo of the Mk I is one of my favourite photos of the Morris LRC, also seems to be one of the most common.

On your web site you talk about Mk1 vehicles being used during the N W Europe Campaign.

I had previously assumed that only Mk2 vehicles were in service in Europe by this date. Do you have any evidence?

Considering that some Beaverette's saw service in N W Europe, anything is possible.

Haven't seen any photos as of yet (photos of the Morris LRC in WW2 are quite rare), but the one at Duxford is depicted as in Northern Europe and I would have imagined quite a few of them would be in Northern Europe, the Accurate Armour 1/35 kit has decals for an NW Europe one which would I imagine be accurate, i'm still looking for some definite evidence though

There is only evidence of one Morris LRC ever serving with 43rd Recce during the war. This is refered to in a period article which appeared in Autocar Magazine during 1944.

Any thing is obviously possible, but I would be supprised if the army had not standardised on the Mk11 (in Europe) by this stage, keeping earlier marks for training. I dont know if you have been able to check when Mk11 production started.

The Reconnaissance Corps were firmly wedded to the Humber product by this stage, so the Morris tended to be used for subsidiary roles such as RE Bridging Companies. The Ian West example you feature on your web site was found in a barn with delivery mileage only on the speedo. At least three were cut down after the war and used as recovery vehicles. Presumably there was a good supply of low mileage vehicles available after the war.

As far as I know, Mk II production started in about mid-1943, cheers for the info about Morris's, no wonder it's been just about impossible to find information about their usage on the net so far! Does anyone out there have a list of who used them? So far i've got RAF Regiment, Royal Engineers (not sure how many and who used them) and 43rd Wessex recce, haven't heard of any others though.

Ah brilliant, i've been looking for that photo for ages! I think the location may be Bayeux - I saw the photo at Bayeux years ago, think it was inside the church, either that or the museum, that's one of only two photos I know of showing the cut down turret

In the latest edition of Classic Military Vehicle David Fletcher states that Thailand were supplied with Morris LRC post-war and he has a photograh showing "a field full of them quietly mouldering away at their main cavalry base"

I can't immagine that they are still there but does any one have any details on Thai use.

Hi dennis, didn't you get my e-mail after you sent me them? Sent a couple of e-mails to you thanking you for them, one straight away and another about a week later, looks like you didn't get them.
