acco 4x4 and 6x6
does anyone have either of these vehicles?>
and if so what are they like to maintain? any web sites that deal with them? cheers james |
There are no unusual traits to maintaining an ACCO, they are pretty much similar to the Commercial version running around all over the country. Service parts for the 292 petrol engine should be available whereever International truck parts are sold, but sources for the specific Military bits are drying up since the closure of North Eastern Truck Wreckers in Vic. NETW used to run ads in 4x4 Trader listing all the parts they stocked.

Hi there James!
Well the main parts that are special to the AACO's is the Transfer case and the power dividers on the rear diffs of the 6x6 model. Both are ADE designed. The T-fer cases seemed to be prity reliable but the power dividers can, if not properly maintained/checked become a achillies heal. But this ofcause is not an issue with the 4x4. I do know of a very nice and original 6x6 F1 cargo with the Abby hyd crain that is forsale here in Brisbane. Not ssure on the price though. Phil... :salute: |
Drop boxes
I understood they were made by david brown (as in tractors)

Gidday James,
We have a few in our collection, three 6x6 tippers and a cargo with hiab. Main problems they were under powered to hell, and they are prone to rusting over here. Also brakes sieze up if not used often. Here is a picture of the one we were told to take away for free, as the guys wife was sick of it being vandalised by local kids, and then having to pay out higher insurance premiums  Cheers, Brent Delaney. |

It is actually the same David Brown as in tractors, Aston Martin cars, tank transmissions....... The company, as many nowadays, has merged with others and gone global, but in its heritage it is in fact the same DB. The Acco boxes were obviously in Aus. as they appear to have a major manufactung facility there. Richard |
Thanks
Richard and Tony, for filling in the gaps. As an army apprentice, I worked on the 6x6,s. I remember they all received a modified transfercase assembly, and converting the dual brake systems from a 2/4 wheel system, to a 3/3 wheel system. (and also the removing of, and rubbish binning of those sought after little convex mirrors, that they arrived with.

6x6 Conversion
A mate of mine running a landscape business has a 6x6 and is looking for a diesel engine for better fuel economy. Other than the now defunct NE Truck wreckers, who are the Australian alternatives, contacts? Also some new inexensive tyres.

1/2 track conversion on an ACCO seen at a clearing sale mid 80s.
The only other source of ACCO bits and tyres I know is W&P machinery in Campbellfield Victoria (haggle like hell). |
