Bonjour Michel

For the Anglophone..... this has nothing to do with "voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir...."

I will translate...or do my best anyways... from my home computer.
The original web translation was rather confusing.

Lost me, Bob, you and your Bi-Linguality!

BTW, the body builder is not Fastern, but Eastern (L'Orient?).

michel.m44 05-04-06 00:47

oh yes you are right, it is Eastern. thank you ;)
I thought that it was a "F"

peter simundson 05-04-06 02:32

Eastern Steel

Eastern Steel Products was an old Rolling Steel Door Manufacturer in Preston with offices in Toronto and Montreal. They made Heavy Rolling Steel Doors of all types and were still in business up to about 1972 and were bought out by Kinnear, that became Kinnear/Eastern Steel. Later Eastern Steel was dropped and they were forgotten to history. The big plant was in Preston Ontario.

Bob Carriere 05-04-06 03:37

My best effort......French that is....

First thanks for the clarification on the Eastern Steel products.....

Please refer to the pictures above to follow what Michel is asking.

Dear readers........ (I like him already he thinks we can read.)

We are an association of French collectors and members of an association loacted in the Provence 44 in the South of France.

We have acquired a Ford of Canada F30. (not lucky it could have been a Chevrolet)

WE are currently restoring the cargo box which was fabricated by Eastern Steel Product Limited. Model 43/6 (probably date of manufacture) Model 7D2....serial number 1012... this information was recovered from the builders ID tag.

It seems that some central parts have been cut out ( the spare tire bracket is still in place)....(if original???) .

We are looking for documentation and detailed photographes to recreate the missing pieces / components.

...end of translation.

First of all who was the French guy that rebuilt the C8.... was for sale for a while.... they should be in touch with one another...... any suggestions from our members of who could help them on the Continent.

I am curious about that F30...... I have seen similar rigs on Dodges for bomb tenders..... what is that one????

Is there really lots missing from the middle of the cargo box???

Alex.... do you have better pictures from your manuals...

A CMPer in need is a friend in deed!!!!!

Bob it is a #7 wrecker set normally found on GMC-CCKW's. The American Army used them mainly on the LWB 353 while the post war French Army used them mainly on SWB352's.

The bomb trucks rig was different in design but similar in looks.

Cheers
Cliff :)

PS> this is the first one I have seen on a CMP and it is probably a post war civilian modification.

michel.m44 05-04-06 12:16

yes cliff the lot7 is a post war civilian modification it is a lot7 of gmc cckw.

Chassis numbers

Bonjour Michel

The photograph of the chassis shows you have a F60S. The F30 (no "S") only had a single speed transfer case. It has been fitted with 16" wheels but should have 20".

The rear fairleads have been modified with an additional small roller which looks to have been welded onto the spring bumper.

All the best,

Keith

michel.m44 05-04-06 12:49

the plate manufacturer with interior of the cabin it is marked that the model is a F30s.

Hi Michel

OK... this is hard to ignore or understand... and the first time I've ever seen reference to that model, but I'm prepared to have an open mind about it!

The possibility exists the plate was incorrectly stamped...

Can I throw the question open to everyone - have any of you ever seen a spare parts list for a F30S? Or any reference to this model anywhere?

Keith...
How far you look for one of those F30S parts manuals..?
You'll still be looking ..There is no F 30 S as far as I know..
The S refers to the wheelbase of the 60 CWT,134 1/4 "WB F 60 S....158 1/4"WB F 60 L....
The F 30 only came in the 134 1/4" wheelbase..

#26: 327 pages NO NUMBER FORD CANADA, ILLUST. ARMY PARTS CATALOGUE 1940-42 FOR CDN. MIL. PATTERN VEHICLES. 8 CWT-4x2, 15CWT-4x2, 15CWT-4x4, 30CWT-4x4, 3-TON4x4, 3-TON-6x4, F.A. TRACTOR 4x4. (Jan. '42)

That was the first manual that I sent to Australia,10 years ago to my buddy,Rocket Rod Diery....
Chassis model number on the F 30 would be stamped.
C01QF for a '40-41 and C29Q for a '42 model F 30.....

Bob Carriere 06-04-06 03:39

Wow....chapeau...

Bonsoir Michel

It seems your truck attracted a lot of attention. So what is a F30s or a F60s that was mis-stamped????

I am asking Michel to confirm whether his truck as a single or two speed transfer case.

To anyone..... is the picture from Michel accurate to show a spare tire bracket inside the box???

Man this is becoming confusing...

Bob

Keith Webb 06-04-06 03:41

tranny case

It would have to be a 2 speed to run the winch, I would have thought!

Bob Carriere 06-04-06 21:23

Assumptions....

Keith

Is it safe to say that F or C30 would ALL be two speed Tcase or only those with the winch....???

When the winch and 2 speed t case is installed..... would they have the higher gear ratio of the 60 cwt???

15 cwt have a 6:39 axle ratio
30 cwt would have ...????the same ratio as a 60 cwt>>>

Or do C30 with a single speed t-case get the 15 cwt ratio of 6:39

If one checkes out the bolted joints on the C30....a re they always the larger size similar to the 60cwt.....???

Just trying to learn what mixes and matches for the next beer session.

Bob C.

Keith Webb 06-04-06 21:51

Stuff for your next beer session

Probably the easiest way to describe a C30 or F30 is to think of it as a stretched 15CWT, so in the case of the Ford it has the light steering and steering ends, small front brake drums, single speed transfer case, high speed diffs (6 39) and 16" wheels.

I've seen some exceptions to this - for instance there are F60L models in Australia, the Stores version which used light steering but had a 2 speed transfer case with low ratio diffs (7 43) and 20" wheels; also our FGTs which were a 3-ton rating used the light steering, but with 2 speed transfer case and low ratio diffs on 20" wheels.
Here, the 30 CWT medium wheelbase chassis was mainly used for ambulances.

Keith Orpin 07-04-06 14:23

For clarification,
Chevrolet 30 cwt trucks equipped with winch, definately had a two speed transfer case, 10.50 x 16 tyres and small front axle ball joints. I'll check out the axle ratios later.
Michel, somewhere on this site you will also find details of my C30 LAAT and various pictures of her. The inside of your body has been completly stripped of all the original equipment. The spare wheel carrier is wrong, and being the 7D2 body would have had two spare wheel carrier mounts, one for the truck tyre and one for the gun tyre. there should be open kit bins on top of the lockers and a square frame work running down the length of the body for the spare gun barrel. On the end of this frame work there is a standard CMP seat facing backward, for some one to sit on and operate the brakes on the gun, when being towed.
I have some interior pictures of the rear body, which I'll post soon
Nice to another CMP being saved.
Keith

Bob Carriere 08-04-06 03:16

Thanks Keith & Keith

For Keith down under...... thanks for the clarification.... I have various C15 and C60 rolling frames but have yet to corner a C30 ........ although I know of one its the old story of it belongst to the old father in law who is going to restore it one day.....

For the other Keith in the UK...... its the first time a read a logical explanation of that single rear facing seat..... I always beleived it came with dunce hat!!!!!! ...but.... how would the person sitting facing the rear would know when to apply the brakes on the bofor????? from the seat of his pants or some sort of signaling device????

Always something to learn!!!

Keith Orpin 10-04-06 14:06

Bob C
Axle ratio for a C30 is 7.16:1 ( the same as a C60). I like the seat of his pants idea for knowing when to apply the gun brakes. Now, the other odd thing I have come across is that in 1940 a small book was produced for both the Chevrolet AND Ford. Just inside the front cover, it has a table of truck models. Both the C30 and the F30 are shown, as C30S and F30S. Quite how a 13 cab comes to have F30S on the plate I'm not sure, unless Ford had a load made earlier on, and where just using them up. I'll see if I can scan the page shortly.
Michel, I'm guessing your Ford is 42/43.
