Portee blues

Had a look at this Portee a week back, the owner says it was driveable 5 years ago, hard to believe when you see the state of it. In the background is the Tasman sea which is why its in such a bad state, Unfortunately the data plates have gone to so thats of no help to those collecting such things. But anyway this is the 16th Portee that I know of still existing Globally. cheers David...

Another contributing factor would surely be parking it under cypress trees - the pollen when mixed with rainwater produces weak sulphuric acid which makes short work of steel.

Sort of a double whammy when combined with salty air.

Pity!

And I thought only the UK had rust! Down here on the south coast of England we have seaside resorts where people live or retire to. The dealers are often full of nice cars with low mileages but you have to beware because of the salty air.

Cheers.

re portee blues

It was seeing trucks abandoned to their fates in paddocks, like the one in Davids photo, that first sent me down the restoration path. Just hate seeing things like that, too depressing, which is why I'm not a big fan of "Wreck Photo's" ...Unless, of course, they show a Cab 13 with an intact driver side door and they are close to home!
Cheers
Richard

When is the "Year of the Portee" challenge? South Is Vs North Is!

Portee gathering

Hi Guys, yeah that tree definitely hasn't helped, especially when it lost a branch which took out what was remaining of the engine covers and cab floor. It is a shame it wasn't rescued earlier, but unfortunately by the time the owners get to us, our wet humid climate, coupled with coastal properties has totalled them beyond help, so it is exciting when the odd vehicle does turn up that has been covered . Unlike our Aussie cousins in some parts, who tow the thing home, give it a sand blast , a coat of paint and its showing up at the next Anzac parade ! As for a Portee parade wouldn't that be cool!!! Although I wouldn't mind seeing a CMP get together over here, as there's plenty around of all shapes and sizes so I'm sure something could be organised. Cheers for now David...

CMP challenge

On to it all ready! I reckon we should give it a go, this morning I went through the NZMVCC membership listing and counted 25 running CMP's just in the North Island, I think there's just as many if not more down your end of the country isn't there Ken. The only problem we have is that body of water between the Nth and Sth Island.
The cost of travel and ferrying would discourage alot of people, expecially with the cost of petrol lately. Still year of the CMP in Corowa was a big success, ( hats of to the organisers) and some of them travelled big distances, maybe we could run a seperate Nth & Sth Island event on the same weekend. Anyway its food for thought, if you want to have a chat about it Ken, PM me and I'll get in touch. Cheers David...

Isn't the NZMVCC AGM to be held at Marlborough Airshow at Blenheim over Easter 2007? Close enough to the ferry and about mid point of the country. Should be able to get plenty of CMP's together!

2007 rally

Hi Tony, yes thats right with the 2007 rally, I'm sure there will be quite a few vehicles travelling down from the Nth island for the event, and with a bit of advertising through the club magazine we should be able to dislogde a few CMP's from thier parking places. I reckon if I fuel up the Portee and leave Monday morning here in Auckland I should get there just in time. ;)
