"OH BUGGER!" (or Embarrassing Situations)
 

Ok...
Well most of us that have driven off road have found ourselves in embarrassing situations where we have been:- stuck, bogged, greasy side up, lack of gription (cross between grip and traction) or some other type of situation that was liable to bring us into some kind of ridicule.

So i will kick this of with some photos from my time in the Army and others I have aquired.

where I have info on the photo I will include a bio...

This photo was taken at a 4x4 park nth of Brisbane when a UL1700 Unimog lost "gription" in what is known as "the pig pen". As it being the only mog in the group of Army vehicles it took the parks owners large 4x4 tractor to extract it.

Well here is another 1 of a "easybog" date July 83 at SWBTA. Took an M113 based ARV to get it out. (photo by me)

Ford Blitz (of cause) from the 1st Armoured Div stuck at the Wallgrove Army camp Sydney Aust. (my pvt collection)

Phill ,what we should do is make this a compertition

perhaps one should be the best oh bugger photo

or another could be the best story and photo of a blitz recovery mission ,perhaps we should include anything miltary.
We need Keefy to come in here as he 's the photo expert and competition organiser. I have a small book here on kokoda that I would donate as a prize. Any suggestions

If you are going to bog..........bog a big 'un :D

There are three shots here of the incident, so you can get the measure of it. There are more photos of the recovery, but that is quite another story.

This was at a MVT event back in 1987 and I am sure the person involved thought it had been forgotten ;) It was the Bovvy End of Season on Bovington Training Area, Mike Roberts was driving the Grizzly belonging to his father, Denis, when this ruddy great hole swallowed him up. I seem to remember the drain plugs were removed and that did not help matters.

Well here is another pic from my private collection:-

Taken in WA durring WW2. The vehicles belong to the 1st Armd Div.

The vehicle in this shot is an Australian Mfg Dingo Scout Car. They lost control on a corner on a dirt road, cliped a tree, ripped out the rear end and ended up where you see it in this shot.

Also note the C15A with Aust rear body and sunshine roof on the cab.

Well here is another one for tonight...

Location; Near Nowra NSW 1998

Incident; Early in the morning while reversing up a very steep road in 1st gear 4x4 the Mog encounted a slippery mossy patch on the road and slid sideways over the edge :eek:

Driver; Me... :bang:

The Mog, which was near new & fitted with a hyd crane. Fortunatly it was unloaded at the time and came to rest at a rather uncomfortable angle. After bailing out & regaining my composure I then worked out how I was going to get out of this situation with out haveing to call for RAEME recovery.

So after clearing my exit route and deploying the crane to act as an outrigger I was able to gingerly drive the truck out... to much relief! :drunk:

So how did you fall off the road? The road looks dry & very flat to me :p

Well the angle that the photo was taken does make it look flat. However if you look closely you will see otherwise. The digger standing near the crane looks like he is leaning over but he is actually standing upright. The hill was difficult enough to walk up and required the lowest gear in 4x4 for the unloaded mog to get up. Also the photo was laken latter in the day and the "oh bugger!" happened at about 0630 when the dew/frost was still out with a vengence.

Believe me it is not a nice feeling when gravity takes over control of 6~7 ton of truck and when you are concentration on reversing then all of a sudden you are going in every which way except reverse is a tad off putting!

To go with the last two pictures posted by Les, ought to be one of an incident in England about two weeks ago. An Oshkosh tank transporter overturned on a roundabout in Ferndown, Dorset enroute to Bovington. It was carrying a Challenger CRRAV armoured recovery. I bet that was the last time the driver gets to drive one of them!

Unfortunately, I cannot find the pics on the web anymore.

Yes i know its post war but it seems pointless in having two threads on this subject so heres a well and truly buggerd Austin K9 in Aden, must be some rocks they threw over there

the real story is one trooper was drying his wet towel out the pasenger window when it flew away. they stoped and ran back to pick up said towel, driver then reversed up to pick up passenger. then colvert and mog had an intimate meeting and mog had a rest. it would be even funnier if it wasn't my truck that these fools were driving!!!

Richard, actualy this is wasn't forgotten at all.... as we all remind Mike AND Dennis about it at the last winterrally in Houffalize... (ofcourse with plenty beer) The blaming went on and on and on and....

G'day All, Just a question, I noticed in the post by Pand65au the Unimog resting on it's nearside, the door that is open has a inverted triangle and is painted black, can anyone tell me what this actually means. The reason I ask is I'm currently restoring a Series 2A Land Rover 109" 3/4 Ton Lightweight workshop truck (RAEME Electrical Repair Census code 6039B), I found many different markings on various parts of the body which I know and understand but both doors had this inverted triangle, I have replicated them both, but I would like to know what they mean, any help greatly appreciated cheers Dennis :sheep:

That night in the bar, the whole episode was covered over and over, using salt and pepper pots, etc. to represent the three recovery vehicles and tank. The more they drank the funnier it was to watch.
