Hi there,

I want to run my Ford V8 on a 6V battery. Which type do I need? how many Ah? I'm also looking for a copy of a Ford V8 manual to get some more technical info. Anybody anything on the shelf?

Roland, according to the MB-F1 manual, the battery used for Ford CMP vehicles is a 17-plate, 6-volt, 100-ampere-hour battery.

I have just fitted a 6V 110AH in the alligator, belive it or not but is still a current Nato Stock. I picked it up from Beltring a good 2 years ago and have just found some one to fill and charge it.

it just won't start!. I bought a 6 V 98 Ah battery but it looks/sounds like it lacks power when I try to start it. I did give it a quick try with a 12 v battery, just to see if it made a big differece and it did. What kind of battery do you use? 12v or 6v. Do you know what type of 12 v ignition coil I need? Do you also have motor mountings for sale the Ford?

I picked up a battery almost the same as yours. In Holland you can buy them brand new. Do you have some more pics of your Loyd? It looks like a nice one, telling from the picture you included.

You answered your own question. Particularly in a cold climate 12 volt is the only way to go! Reliable starts, all parts readily obtainable and MUCH cheaper, brighter lights, can jump start from any modern vehicle, can run your in-car DVD player or MP3!

Starter will handle 12 volts without doing anything.

Original generator/dynamo will easily produce 12 volts but you need to get a 12 volt voltage regulator from a car wrecking yard of any 60/70 era car (better if off a type that had generator not alternator). Some of the wartime voltage regulators can be "tweaked" up to 12 volt so you can use the original.

Change light globes to 12 volt.

Any auto electrician will give you an in line resistor to put in the fuel gauge wire to reduce it to 6 volt so you dont have to change your instrument. All the other instruments work normally.

Coil can be any INTERNAL RESISTOR type off any car. Probably an older model but all motor parts shops carry them. Condensor should be replaced at the same time - take your old one down and match it to one with the same size, screw hole position and wire length - off any car.

Just a thought... Restorers often have a problem with 6v in jeeps because their battery leads and earth straps are too small (in cross section) they work OK with 12 volt, but need big cables for 6 volt.

I think Dirk's got the mounts, but in what condition is the engine? Did you check the cilinder walls? Maybe some rust on the cilinder walls, as it has been sitting for a long time.

That's interesting, Lang - first time I've heard of getting 12v from a 6v generator. You've tried it yourself?

If you run it fast enough you will get about 30 volts out of it.
I have had all my vehicles (jeeps, Dodges and Chevs) using the old generator with another regulator. The Dodge I took to Normandy even used the original regulator "tweaked" but it was a bit tired and the points kept sticking so I just put a $5 Delco from an old Holden on and it worked fine.

A lot of people of course just get an internally regulated alternator and create a trouble free, high capacity charging system with half an hours work but it doesn't look right if you are fussy.

with Lucas, a 6 volt generator can be converted to 12 volt by changing in the field coils from a 12volt generator.
A 12 volt generator (un regulated) will put out in excess of 50 volts. (not for long)

This is a genuine "Can eat your dinner off the floor" restoration - very nice job.

Thanks for the complaments. I will try and reduce the qualitiy of my workmanship!! LOL

The whole resto was only going to take three years but like all these things they always take longer. So all being well the inside will be completly finished by Christmas. which means I can make a start on restoring all 14 iddlers and roadwheels. and track!!
