reinforcements - armour

Gentlemen:

I am trying to sort out some details regarding the posting of soldiers from 1st Base Reinforcement Depot, then in Phillipeville, Algiers.

Individual in question appears to have been assigned to 4th PLDG in late August of 1943.

Regimental history shows the arrival of a number of reinforcements during same period.

Question(s): 1) Would a trooper be assigned to regiment prior to being shipped from Phillipeville to Sicily, or would he have been assigned to the 4th Battalion, Base Reinforcement Depot (then in Sicily) before being absorbed by the PLDG at later date?

2) Can anyone tell me what "X" List meant on records?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

1. Reinforcement/replacement soldiers would have reported to Base Reinforcement Depot prior to being forwarded to his final destination.

2. The "X" list is;

X1 - prisoner of war (P.O.W.)
X2 - detention
X3 - hosptial
X4 - reinforcement/reinforcement in transit
X5 - on course
X6 - missing
X7 - on loan
X8 - in transit
X9 & X10 - waiting return

Mr. Law:

Thanks for the info. The X-List listing is most helpful.

Just to clarify:

A trooper landing in Sicily would have gone to base reinforcement depot where it would be decided that a particular regiment was in need of a driver-mechanic?

I am assuming this is what you meant and that the soldier would arrive at his new unit where he would receive cap badge, shoulder titles etc (?)

I am guessing this is what took place.

Correct.
BTW, the X-List is courtesy of Mark Tonner and was found after a simple search at the Canuck forum.

Mr. Law:

I confess I am not aware of Canuck Forum. It sounds as though it might be pertinent to my (endless) queries.

The records I am researching are quite baffling....

Please advise as to above if you could.

Cheers

The Canuck forum is to Canadian uniforms and organisation what MLU is to vehicles. Good participation, amateur experts (oxymoron?), well moderated, etc... Go to Canuck
