Mystery Vehicle Seen In East Ottawa

Any guesses as to what it is? Sorry, Stewart, you can't play.

Dan Sicotte 20-07-06 02:49

It's a LAV III, Variant......who knows. I'm thinking is a REME type. There was a bison MRT version in Somalia. (Somalia said with a whisper). But I haven't seen them since. It could also be an EW variant. There is no turret...or gun (105mm) that I can see, so it's not a Canadian striker. The bulge in the back tells me that it could have a hyab or something of that nature. But your guess is as good as mine.

Tada!!!!

MMEWS, n'est-ce pas?

Bastardized offspring of the ADATS, indecently mated with an LAV III chassis.

What prize do I get?

Try again, Jon. This is not the Multi-Mission Effects Vehicle (MMEV), although you are very close to the prize as the OEM touted this vehicle as the MMEV at Eurosatory this year. MMEV has yet to make the "paper to reality" transition, and it does far more than this beastie can do.

Any other takers?

Jon Skagfeld 20-07-06 04:07

Damn...thought I had that all expense paid trip to Utter Oblivion, Sask.

Well...back at you...LAV III chassis, sure looks like ADATS tubes.

What's that semi-circular device at the rear...a blast shield of some sort?

Also, no CFR plate, therefore prototype, not yet in CF inventory.

Are you gonna tell us, or do I privately e-mail Stewart then spill the beans?

Why the Weapon of Mass Obstruction in front of the vehicle??

Bob Carriere 20-07-06 04:21

Can I have crack at it....

Rob told me they had the beast up the 60% incline on the terst ground but still would not tell me what it was......

Nice machine but not rusted enough for my taste.....

That circular thing is probably an hydraulic air brake for highspeed runs.... and that square box is the new armored BBQ which we hope to borrow to cook weiners at BB1......

I have doubts that Rob's son will ever get a chance to buy a rusted model of this one 40 years from now.....

PS... I understand the Russian embassy is monitoring this site...... nudge nudge wink wink....

Is it an Air Defence Anti-Tank System

I googled "Lav 3" missile and came up with this picture. They sure look the same.

No way, Jordan...two completely different vehicles...ones tracked, the other's wheeled, for starters.

I think what you posted is the Javelin on an M113 (or Eryx)...or maybe it's the the highly elusive original ADATS system of which only 32 remain, the rest having cost so much (what...one billion for 33 vehicles?) that they're held in reserve. At least it was definitely in the CF inventory having had a CFR plate.

Jordan Baker 20-07-06 04:34

I didn't mean the vehciles themselves. More what was mounted on them. The launchers looked the same.

OK...I see what you're getting at , there.

That leads me back to my original thought that RH Clarke's photo is of an LAV III variant (prototype) which has had the ADATS tubes cannibalized.

oztankboy 20-07-06 04:42

Hi there!

Well may be different vehicle to the tracked one however the hardware on top appears basicly the same.

The "blast shield" that was suggested is infact the radar dome in the folded down tansit position. So this points it to be some type of air-defence system.

Phil... :salute:

Here is another picture of the ADATS on a M113.

The satilite dish and the rectangular box that its attached to look the same.

Kudos to Jon and Jordan who are both partially correct. Both may collect a cold beer at Bob's BBQ this August.

This beast (IPD as we call it) is indeed an ADATS (Air Defence Anti Tank System) turret mounted on a "shaved down" LAV III. All of our other ADATS are mounted on a M113A3 chassis.

The interesting news here is that this "concept" vehicle is fully functional. The lessons learned with this integration project will be applied to any future air defence projects.

Jon, your cost figures for the ADATS are off-target - don't forget that we also bought 20 GDF 005 twin 35mm Guns, 10 Skyguard fire control units, all related ILS and munitions out of the total $1B. Also keep in mind that once the LLAD Project fielded this great kit, the Russian quit on us! Now that is value for money!

As for you Clive, I resemble that WMO remark...

Now, if they could just get the Taliban to start flying some planes.

Taliban pilots - Not a good idea. IPD/ADATS/MMEV - very good idea. Ask the French about their "no air threat" assessment while deployed in Ivory Coast...
