Gentlemen,
here is picture showing some toolbox or what beneath the HUP floor. Is it original CMP feature or was it added as something purpose-made during the postwar service? I know nothing about the origin of this vehicle but it belongs to the Czech collector. I know that many CMPs went to Czechoslovakia under UNRRA support, some HUPs were used by Czechoslovak Broadcasting as mobile reporters post and some ended by fire brigades. It might be a clue to the box shown here. Any ideas?

Happy searching,
Jan Mostek.

I have seen rear storage boxes before

I've seen this before on both pictures taken during the war and after. Think that it was probably a workshop added feature to carry more stuff. One of the CBC recording units was equipped with what looks like a combination rear step and storage box ( see photo http://canadianmilitarypattern.com/CBCandBBC.html ) also in Wheels and Tracks Number 2 there are pictures of HUWs with something additional in this area. There is also a HUA with something stored in this location.

My HUP never made it overseas. VE Day was in May 45, and my truck rolled off the line in August. My guess is that the box is a design improvement for the model that was added by the manufacturer in response to the Army's wishes...

Bob Carriere would have me believe that the HUP's improved frame, suspension and creature comforts were for the benefit of the Officer Corps. With that in mind, the rear locker would be useful for storing ones wine and cheezes.

Seriously, I believe the box (chain/tool box locker) was a product improvement.

Perhaps someone with the CMP Design Record CD set could look this up...Mike?

I am surprised that Brian Gough hasn't answered yet. He is at his east coast retreat but is probably up to his ears in Moosehead and lobsters. It seems to me that he once told me this was for the storage of the canvas tarps that I can't for the life of me remember the proper name for. :confused

Tool chest

I think we're looking at the '45 HUP 1C11 PERS-3 staff car that belongs to Frantisek Nachtlinger's uncle or dad, I'm not sure which. Frantisek has posted and sent a number of pics (I have one beauty shot of it I keep in front of me at my desk at work). IIRC, the staff car had that tool chest mounted underneath at the rear because of the "officer accommodations" inside the cab. I think it was unique to the staff car, along with a number of other features.

In some far off, distant future, I'm probably going to want dimensions and details of that thing.

The term I couldn't remember is "penthouse". It's irrelevant now if its for tools.

Here's a picture with the penthouse deployed. They must have stored it somewhere.

RHClarke 07-08-06 02:49

Penthouse, eh?

Shouldn't the photo be sort of out of focus...anyway,if anyone has the dimensions for the penthouse canvas and poles, please post them!

Greg Wright, please keep a copy of the abovementioned photo as this is what I will be looking for you to stitch together for me.

Here's one that looks to have a penthouse rolled up on both sides.

This one has the single penthouse rolled up.

Penthouse

The first photo of a penthouse shows that it is made of two components: 1. the roof and 2. the walls [plus poles & other fiddly bits]. So the photo with a penthouse on both sides - could this be roof on nearside and walls on offside? Wolud not the roof be permanently fixed to the vehicle roof at one end ?

The HUPs with two rear side doors seemed to have two penthouses while the newer ones just had one. They wanted access to the HUP interior. It looks like it's just the roof part that's rolled up. There doesn't seem to be enough material in that roll for the walls too. They must have been stored elsewhere. And yes, the roof part was attached to the HUP roof.

I saw the same HUW at Beltring in 2001 so it may be a regular.

Is there a particular angle or detail that you are looking for?

Cheers

... have a look at my website. I took a lot of Blitz-pics at Beltring 2008. There's at least 1 pic of that Blitz.

greetings
Chris
