New HUP
 

Hey,

Well, my day in the bush paid off. This is the HUP that I was looking for, although it's quite tough it does have some usable parts left on it. Over the years the driveline was removed and most likley used on a skidder, but the body wasn't cut up or completely stipped of parts.

I did speak to the owner, (as luck would have it they were in at their camp working on improving the trail in!) and I was able to secure the remains for a very resonable price.

The cowl (which is actually in very good shape) was beside the truck and has remains of the unit markings in it. Does anybody know what unit(s) "221" in a rectangle could refer to?

I always loved the HUP, but this one is really not worth restoring. That being said, there are some good pickings on it like the roof hatch, small parts, and the front end, that will probably come in handy in the future.

Too bad I didn't have a cut up HUP kickng around here that needed body parts only.

Nice find. There always seem to be HUPs pop up around here that have been cut to the window level. It's the body/roof assembly that most of them really need.
Is the lower sheet metal/floor rusted through? Most of those panels are fairly simple to replace.

now why can't I find a body like that as I have the running gear to go under it !!! :confused nice find though as it seems that HU's usually got cut as they were not useful in the bush etc... with their body on !!

Make sure you scour the surrounding bush...
 

for HUP parts, you never know what you will find. Maybe that large roof hatch. I was missing the division plate between the cab and back of my HUW, and I went back to where the truck had sat 20 years previously, and found it lying in the scrub!!! You never know!

The floors of the truck are actually decent under the moss and dirt. There is one hole behind the passenger seat, which is still in the truck, but the lower sheetmetal is actually better than the roof. The Wheelopenings above the rear fenders are bad, as is the rear of the body due to dents, but the roof skin is by far the worst. As the truck is still on it's frame the lowers have not yet hit the ground.

The exellent work I saw done to Mr. Clarke's truck is in the back of my head when I think about possibilities (if there are any) for this one. The re-skinning that I saw on that truck was very nice and done locally if I'm correct.

I knew of a HU for sale in the Montreal area that was cut behind the front cab, but I havn't been that way in two years so it may be gone.

This coming weekend sounds as though it will be interesting as well!!

It's something to find one that wasn't cut down - I was just the other day looking at a HUP in the museum in Austin, Man., that had been coverted to a tow truck, using a GS box on the back, among other oddities. It's a mystery to me why someone looking to have a wrecker in that config wouldn't have just grabbed a 15cwt, rather than go to all the trouble. Surely, here must have been more of them available.

About 3 years ago I found a HUP that had good running gear but a cut off body. Near Parry Sound. I posted a picture on this forum at the time - I'll attach if I can find it again.

Do you plan to go to Hammond this weekend? I plan to be there on Sunday.

By coincidence most of the people will be here for the Saturday with some arriving Friday afternoon or evening.....

I suspect that, based on Chatsworth experience, the out of towners will have breakfast at "Chez Marie" down the road and hit the road before noon......

However I will be here until at least 3:30 when I have to escape to the Hull hospital to tend after Mom......

I would love to see you David and see what can be done to that bent bracket..... and Jason who lives in Ottawa or anybody else for that matter to drop in...... there should be some left over beer and a frsh burger if you wish.

Am I to assume that you willbe at the Gatineau airport on Saturday...... woiuld love to hear about that event and maybe get involved next year...... where else can you have you truck photographed next to a real live Spitfire.....

Please get back to me guys so we can plan something.....

I did attend Gatineau and it was a great day. Not too many attendees but to see that workshop and a partially dismantled Spit and Hurri up close.......(see picture - sorry if off-topic). Plus a very nice slat-grille jeep in the collection.

Liked the picture of Spitfire hanger, knew a guy who had a couple of War Birds and his hanger looked like that the floor was always that clean. But then again if you can afford a flying Splitfire or P51 you probably can afford a guy to do nothing but keep everything spit and polished.
