I have several Mine Probes for sale. I am not sure of the date of manufacture but they come with a P37 carrier for them.
They are $30.00 each. They look good as an acessory on your vehicle.

I have some with green webbing as well, it looks like the P37 webbing but it is green.

Well they were widely used... I know for a fact that Australian Eangineers used them. I remember them being part of our section kits in the 80's. No idea to their vintage.

One finale point they make for great spikes for picking up paper etc!

Would make a good poking stick to get all the kids off/away from your cmp, carrier etc!!!

some kids, and parants too are just too stupid. one set walked under the rope, removed the do not touch sign, and climed on top of the engine comp for a cool view of the event :mad:

Mine Probe, Part 2
 

Just got my Mine Probe in the mail from Greg Wright. (Cheque in the mail).

Side note to Greg...is your asking price covering your mailing costs?

Anyway, with new toy in hand, I played around trying to affix this thing onto my C 15A.

Bearing in mind that this probe is post war and not applicable to a CMP, I did two ad hoc adaptations...one pretty good, the other not so good.

The not so good...linking both securing straps in a horizontal fashion onto the U-links of the towing lugs, the apparatus didn't "sit" well.

The good...(exhibiting "Way Cool Factor" image)...with the probe in the perpendicular, wrap the top securing strap to the bumper bar. Then secure the bottom strap through the slot in the bracket which feeds the jack handle.

Really cool effect for a static display...I can hear it now, as people ask "Wot's that thing on the front for?"

First scenario...

Well, sir, it's a walking stick for inspecting officers. Once they get out of the vehicle cab, they now had a stick with which to perambulate, postulate and pontificate as they paraded down the ranks muttering "Good show, good show, good show".

Second scenario...

Well, sir, (he said earnestly)...this is the rare and desirable Airborne jack handle, used only by Airborne Forces with their modified, smaller scaled CMPs.

Third scenario...

Matron, during her rounds uses the tip of the probe to...well, let's not even go there.

BTW, there's a NATO Stock Number (NSN) on the probe...6665-99-204-5550. I called buddy of mine in Supply at a nearby military base. He looked up the NSN, and it's officially catalogued as "Probe, Mine, No 5".

I've got a digital pic of the probe mounted on my C15A, but still don't know how to embed same in a Forum posting.

Maybe e-mail to someone who can, in turn, post on the Forum?

A few observations to follow up on Jon's. Jon, does your source indicate Canadian NATO use?

Probe No. 5 eh? You'd think they could have figured out how to make a poker like this in less than five modifications.

There is no /|\ or C/|\ or dates anywhere on the item or carrier, only the NATO number stamped on. Are these WW2 and the stamp applied later? The carrier and brass ends look WW2 British, but again no markings of any kind. British perhaps, given the proven Australian use? WW2 is possible given that loads of stuff was produced then and it's not uncommon to have it issued years later if available in storage and practical.

No indication of Canadian NATO use.

Even though the 5th and 6th numbers (99) indicates UK source, the probe appears in the Canadian Government Catalogue of Materiel, and is therefore current.

Perhaps used by RCE, or even an infantry Pioneer Platoon?

PS...I e-mailed the pic of the probe mounted on my Chev to Sunray. He said he would post it in due course.

Still eagerly anticipating the two I ordered...it takes forever for packages to get here from Canada. I recently purchased a 2" mortar round disguised as a trench art lamp and it took over a month to get to Texas from Canada.
I'm interested as to the vintage of these probes. I was a C.M.E. and my reenacting impression is that of a R.C.E. of 18 Field Engineer Company (yes, my B.C. friends, I know it's a Toronto unit!) When was P37 webbing phased out? The webbing is obviously designed for the mine probe so could it have been WW II issue? I took several E.O.R. courses and basic mine clearance (no HA, HB or HX courses) and we always used or C7 bayonet as a mine probe, never saw this mine probe.
Reason I'm asking is that I want to issue Cpl Bloggins a mine probe, as soon as he recovers from his head wound, of course!

Further to my last post, here's a Canadian Army pic of demining activity. Look closely at the left hand of the kneeling Engineer...could that be some kind of mine probe?

Great choice of unit for the RCE. My late great unlce was a Sgt. with the Coy. Landed in one of the first waves of the Normandy Invaision and when right through to the end of the war.

I am a currently serving member of the Canadian Forces and while working as an assault Pioneer several years ago, we used the same mine probes during minefield breaching exercises. As for the colour of the web carrier, keep in mind that this type of webbing was still being produced in the 1950's and beyond. I have a map case that is identical to a '37 pattern case (same WW2 colour) and it is dated 1983. I would think that if the probes are stamped with NSN's that they are post war manufactured. If the NSN's are engraved with an electric pencil then they could be older.

I saw a box full of these probes at [ PRE FAIR] SURPLUS in Montreal ,1055 Louis-Marchand, Beloeil j3G 6s4. Tel 450 446 7060.
Their in behind S.A.I.L surplus,the two outfits are separate. Lots of canvas ,dewat shells etc even saw some rusty links and 14.5mm combloc cases. Lots of Iltis parts outside and some whole units for sale.
Montreal traffic sucks but it was worth the visit !
