This is me in my Jeep in Sep. 1978 ..... it was a slatt grill 41 MB . DOD 31/12/41 . In those days LHD vehicles were a big NO NO here , so ways were found to get around the rules . I won't say what I did , but I got away with it .

number plates

hi Hanno ,

Well, I did the old number plate switching thing .Here In Victoria , the only way to drive around in a LHD vehicle was , it had to have pre 1948 registration . The number plates here from 1939-53 were a two digit - three number system e.g., AA000 to ZZ999 . By 1946 they were up to J

I found a CMP F15A with original 1946 reg on it . I did the swap legally , but I didnt tell the guys at the RTA , the vehicle was LHD !
I recall going into the city to the RTA to do it, there were still many 1940's tramways buses in use in Melbourne til the mid 70's , with wartime plates on them . Old Leyland Tigers chugging along , thay must have clocked up millions of miles by then.

My first CMP in 1977 was a 1943 C15 wireless , the GMH bodied variant , it had been down , made into a pickup . I bought that Jeep pictured in 1976 , took 2 years rebuilding it , used heaps of bog in the panels ., much rough welding , my panel beating hasn't improved that much !

Below is a DUKW we found in a rubbish tip in the 1970's . I had long hair then .... not now .

And others

Others I've heard of were Ford Prefect utes, the description of which was close to a Jeep.

The photo gives away the answer...... You drove it everywhere in reverse, therefore technically driving it from the right side.

Darn it. You found me out :( ... (but it's rather a case of too much coffee and cigarettes fueling a genetic predisposition to cheeky-ness methinks :D )

 (I always wish we had coffee/tea cups smilies in here because i rarely partake of the creature and such spirits. Coffee is my drug of choice )
