Buyer beware......

...or if it sounds too good to be true....it probably isn't.

In the lastest issue of Convoy Magazine was a For Sale listing that read......

SELL: Cab 12 Chev: has frame mounted winch, modified rear frame/dual wheels axle ALSO another cab 12 Chev C15 (apparently a running/smoking truck complete with box)Both must be moved quickly! Take them both for $800 Location East York......( apparently by-law officers were making life rough for him.)

By 3 pm that same day I started to call and only connected when the guy got home after 8 pm......

Well the story had changed now..... only the modified truck was for sale and asking $600.... agreed it might be reasonable if some close up pictures could be exchanged to support the condition described on the telephone.

Said pictures arrived via a friend also a regular seller from Epay.
Pictures where good and honestly supported the verbal description so relayed that I would buy the truck for $600 that he asked for. Following message from the Epay friend is that I am really stealing his friend and he could get a lot more for such an antique if listed on EPay........ can't disagree but without the roof hatch, no seats, modified frame and rear axle I explained that it was still a good deal at $600..... after all that is what I had paid for a more complete model from Doug W. last Summer.

Well last contact this evening is that the buyer was now entertaining bids of up to $1200 dollars sight unseen from other buyers..........

I had not understood that the initial "For Sale" of two trucks at $800 was just a "common on" for an auction war of a parts truck.

Well I didn't loose any money on it .... just a little steam.

Pays to deal with MLU regulars and those associated with the hobby........ where I have never ever encountered this crap before.

POed but wiser.

Hi Bob

That rather sucks for you as I know you really love these little trucks. I did think of you when I saw the ad but figured you would be on it quiiker then well you know what.

I would maybe drop Marc Montgomery a line to let him know what was going on.

Jordan

Bob Carriere 22-09-06 04:28

I would not blame Marc M.

....even the best reputable magazine gets taken by strange sellers.......

I did post on the Convoy site as well.......

.... you just never know.

I was the only bidder on a 1940 truck + a cargo box full of parts and two extra cabs.....listed on EBay and got a very good deal. When I picked it up the seller confirmed to me that I had a good deal as the scrap value was more than the $100 I had bid.... but he added a deal is a deal she's all yours.

They are not all like that.

No way would I ever blame Marc as he is only the messenger. I guess it falls under the "Too good to be true" heading

Truck found

Bob. Check E Bay #220030851325. Is that it???

Bob Carriere 23-09-06 03:31

That's the one....

You are correct Peter..... his EPay friend just notified me that they had listed on EBay......

The pictures are different than what he sent me.... I did not realize how the frame had been butchered and extended......

I still think the $600 I had offered was reasonable for the parts I could salvage........ note that no pictures of the rear axle with dual wheels is included or mentioned..... and from the ten ++ plus years it has been sitting (according to the owner) I would like to see that engine started has he claims....... strange that he would llist for only $550 US when he told me he had site unseen offers of $1200 CDN.......

Really too bad ......... I hope he doesn't expect me to bid on it!!!!

I wish him all the best of luck....... the only thing really going for it is the location which was attractive to me in Ottawa... I know of better trucks both East and West for better prices but the recovery cost in diesel is murder.....

There's more

Bob. That's 300 more than he would get out of me. There's one like it about 10 miles from me...more complete $ 500. Want photos???

Bob Carriere 23-09-06 03:48

Are you kidding......

You're darn right I want photos and address for me to pickup....

Very interested Peter.......

Thanks

Bob C.

Greg 23-09-06 20:23

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info. It is people like that, that make it hard to have faith in dealing with people on the internet.

Cheers,
Greg

Well for my .02 cents worth, we certainly don't need a**holes like this in the hobby...
Good reason to deal amongst ourselves and be suspicious of those who don't have a clue...
If I were Marc I certainly would not entertain further adverts from this loser

RHClarke 24-09-06 03:07

HUP?

Did someone say HUP? If you know of the existence of a 45 HUP that may be up for sale (in the central Canada area), puuuleeese, let me know.

Meanwhile, anyone looking for 43 HUP parts? I have some for trade.

PS BIll M - got your gas tank - it may need a touch of paint (and new metal...).

1940's Chev CMP & Winch Item number: 220030851325

Description (revised)
This is a 1940,s era Canadian Military Pattern truck. They were built to be sent to England and they came with right hand drive. This truck has been sitting for a while and needs to be restored. With the cable drum or winch it could be restored to a wrecker easily. It is missing a few things, it has no seats and it never did have side windows. The motor is not stuck but it will most likely need at least a tune up to get it to run on it's own. This truck could easily be restored or used as a parts truck. These trucks are very rare, when was the last time you saw a CMP with a factory cable drum? If you want you can store the truck with us for up to ten days after the auction ends while you arrange to transport this truck but the fee must be paid within 48 hours. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time because it is for sale locally.

oztankboy 24-09-06 11:12

Hey there!

One thing I noticed with the winch set up is that it is useing the same coupling that i have only seen used in the Chev gun tractors.

Phil... :salute:

Greg 24-09-06 13:38

Hi Bob,

I had a look at it on ebay, I would not bid more than $250.00
for it. It looks pretty rough.

Cheers,
Greg

Bob Carriere 24-09-06 15:37

Follow up....

Hi Hanno

That's the one...... there is no doubt in my mind that the winch was transplanted from a gun tractor and probably has the two speed trannsfer case as well.......

In the original conversation witht he owner he had claimed that it came form the Elliot Bros. yard......... they would have had the parts ......necessary to the modification......

Gregg can you send me a PM on details of that bldg.

Bob

Bob Carriere 18-11-06 04:46

Would you believe.....

Just been contacted by the seller...... remember it was listed at $600 US on EBay...... then it was pulled a few days before the end of the auction.....with zero bids.

I am now offered the truck for $1000 firm........

....... what a deal !!!!!!

I will say this for the chap, he has got B***s the size of an elephant......

The sad part is, if the story is true, he has to get ride of the truck before the city makes him scrap the whole thing. His telephone number is listed in the last issue of Convoy magazine.... if any one local wants to low ball him on the price be my guest.

There is poetic justice after all.

Bob

Brian Gough 28-11-06 06:51

Brian

peter simundson 28-11-06 16:12

the truck returns

WOW!.... Brian you have sharp eyes. Or you spend a great deal of time looking.

Care to estimate what a complete Ford 8cwt would be worth. All there but somewhat rusty.
Peter
