In the late '90s while on exercise at Camp Blanding, Florida I was attracted by the sound of diesel engines and tracks. I happened upon the motor pool and saw approximately 100 M113's being driven and parked in rows, all with DMSO roughly painted on their sides. I inquired and was told that DMSO stood for De-Milled Struck Off service in preparation for auctioning off to the public. When I expressed interest in perhaps purchasing one, the E6 in charge told me that they were to be cut in half and sold for scrap. What a waste! I wonder how hard it would be to recover one of the hulls being dumped for a restoration project...and how many federal laws would you have to break!!!

Those don't appear to be just any M113 either. They look like the extended version. I'm sure I see 6 roadwheels on the first one pictured.
Here in Canada, we are just in the process of extending the hulls on the bulk of the M113s which we will retain in service. At the same time they will get repowered, and I believe there were plans to install double wide Diehl track on them. The videos they showed us had them almost standing up they had so much HP. They raced an AVGP and won!!

At the same time that we relife the approx 300 carriers which we will retain, we will also be disposing of 600 that we no longer need. I have already seen some used for targets and in simulating minestrikes. There were hopes of selling some off to other countries.
