The War Brides

Yes, tens of thousands married Canadian soldiers during the war, coming over here after the war in groups. Some of these have organized a train trip back to Pier 21 in Halifax, where they all landed. They're arriving right now as I type this, with a military Guard of Honour and band... and it's being shown on CTV Newsnet. Catch it if you can! These old dears are wonderful to see.

Thanks Steve, I watched and listened to it. Nothing better I'd like than to be able to visit with these women and hear them talk. Amazing women to leave everything and everyone known and familiar behind to be with her Canadian husband and build a life far from home. THAT is love and commitment to take that leap. Pioneers is how I think of them :)

Well ... THAT made tears in my eyes!!! I just saw the news and it showed clips of some of these now elderly women and their elderly husbands renewing their vows in ceremonies at Pier 21.

Karmen, I saw what you wrote and tuned in CTV Newsnet. What a pleasure to see those old folks affirm their vows!

I'm really glad you caught that! It really is rather beautiful :)

A newscaster mentioned that about 40,000 women came over as War Brides. To see some of these women and men still living, for this moment, frail-ly, yet spirited and ageless, walking down the aisle to renew their vows with another "I Do" and a kiss ... is yet another Victory of a long life together. Precious Happy Canadian Moments ;)
