Evocative music
 

Greetings all:

How many of you have been profoundly moved by pieces of music?

Somewhat sub-topical, but, I think, probably with a hook to members of this forum.

My list (some of which bring tears to my eyes):

1. Ode to Joy, lv Beethoven

2. Nabucco, Verdi (to be played at my funeral)

3. Panzer Lied

4. Finlandia

5. British Grenadiers/Here's to the Maid of Bashful Fifteen

Does anyone else wish to contribute/ share?

Jon, a good subject to post about. EVERYONE is moved by music!

I wish I knew those pieces but I'm not very knowledgable about classical music and who did what. I DO know that I certainly enjoyed my visit with you and Betty and hearing your classical music quietly playing in the background. Sounds for the soul ;)

I found some "tastes/samples" of Pachelbel online. Wish I could hear the whole songs. I really love the violins.

Geoff, I know you love violin, so maybe you'll enjoy these too, even if they are only bits of the whole songs. :)

3. Die Valkure...isn't that Lohengrin's Ride of the Valkeries? (Apocalypse Now). We used to use that piece in order to terrorize troopies in recruit training during a night attack. Next morning was laundry parade!

5. Auld Lang Syne...I was raised in Scotland and this tune is firmly planted in my psyche. I, being dark haired, would go "first footing" at midnight, thus bring luck to whomever was visited.

In Canada we call it "Teepee Creeping" while humming North Atlantic Squadron...and we needed luck not to get caught....
OOooohhhhh.....exciting....

Being based in mainland Europe, I have distinctly mixed feelings about this one. It's been adopted as an anthem by the EU and is meant to make us all feel better about fat cat unelected politicians and nonsense regulations.

I have always been moved by the melancoly lament of the old Soviet National Anthem. It reminds me of the hardships the people have endured in decades gone past and now. There are not too many photos that I have seen with smiling and joyous citizens. Even my family photos of past generations all seem so dower.

I also like the Maple Leaf Forever.

Like Mike, I find the old anthem of the USSR to be very moving even though we heard it only after Canada lost a sporting event.
Still though, the most moving for us all should be "O Canada".

At school in the 60s, we sang THE MAPLE LEAF FOREVER. I shant forget that, even though most of the rest of the country has... :mad:

I don't know of that song "Maple Leaf Forever" :confused:

Every morning in school we stood and sang Oh Canada and said the Lord's Prayer, then always stood and sang God Save Our Queen at the end of the school day. That was Beausejour, Manitoba, starting in grade one and right through to the end of grade 5 and we moved away.

On the subject at hand, I am inclined towards the pipes given my heritage, although martially, I also have an ear to numerous marches, with special consideration given to those of the Royal Green Jackets and specifically, the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada.

Privately, I'm basically a big suck, and country music gets me going. I do profess a liking for bands such as Blue Rodeo, and have a soft spot for Journey and Steve Perry. Flexible, though, it all depends on mood.

Well, sing it LOUD, because it goes with our (now defunct) Red Ensign... :teach:

Okay ... I'll learn the tune and make an audio-video clip of myself singing it while holding the Red Ensign. Will that do? Or will I scare all the MLU-ers away? :eek:
