Wish We Had a Canuck Version

On another Forum I came across this link and thought it would be a good thing to share with all the MLUers. Like I said in the title I wish we had a Canuck version but since we don't (at least none that I know of that have been this up front), maybe we can make her an honourary Canadian. Can we get a petition going?

Thank you for posting the link Japes :) I had heard and seen this before but am very glad you posted so I could again.

The woman is amazingly gorgeous voiced, gorgeous looking, and gorgeous lyrics that really mean something. I can easily understand how she would be probably THE ultimate poster girl for the soldiers. The song IS VERY moving.

Karmen.

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 09-12-06 20:41

Yeah... youdathunk someone like Shania could have done something like that, or even that self-absorbed, rich idiot Céline. Blue Rodeo?

Don't get me started. At least Gordon Lightfoot did what he could, bless the man forever.

Vets Dottir 09-12-06 20:52

Why don't all Canadian Military Types and supporters pick a favored likely Canadian candidate who we figure would do a good song/video and do it up right and beautiful, and inundate that recording artist with requests to take on this task of composing and performing it???

I really like this idea! :salute:

Karmen

Vets Dottir 09-12-06 20:54

Doesn't have to be someone as "big" as Celine or ??? ... just someone who would do an excellent job.

I have a few music connections that maybe I could see if I could go through the Canadian music grapevine. Most people I know are Jazz, but not all, and many are sorta "up there" and know a lot of other big music makers in the industry ..... with the right promo it could be great ...

Someone who would also make an EXCELLENT POSTER BOY/GIRL whatever :D Although GIRL would sell more posters are there are moy BOY soldiers :D

Karmen

Vets Dottir 09-12-06 20:58

Japes, now just see what you may have started here? :D Thank you ... maybe this will even go somewhere!

Okay.

Well, how about brainstorming in here with names of Canadian artists who might be good at this? I can't think of anyone specific off the top of my head, but I was also thinking of someone young who could reach the young especially, but someone who would do a performance that would appeal to all age groups and cut through the barriers of certain "types" of music that are select groups. "With the times" yet striking chords in the older traditional types, etc. At any rate, someone who would appeal to the general public no matter what their age.

Anyone have any names in mind?

Karmen.

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 09-12-06 21:23

No names immediately, but country/folk/pop genre, and preferably a good-looking female (that lets out Rita McNeil :D )... I'll work on it. Who's our equivalent of Deanna Carter?

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 09-12-06 21:31

Just watched/listened to the Beccy Cole thing again. Count me in as a fan for life.

I hope someone in Oz made her an Honourary Digger!

Now let's find our own.

FYI ... I did enjoy singing along to this one :D

Artist: Deana Carter Lyrics

Flowers and wine is what I thought I would find
When I came home from working tonight
Well now here I stand, over this frying pan
And you want a cold one again

I bought these new heels, did my nails
Had my hair done just right
I thought this new dress was a sure bet
For romance tonight
Well it's perfectly clear, between the TV and beer
I won't get so much as a kiss
As I head for the door I turn around to be sure
Did I shave my legs for this?

Now when we first met you promised you'd get
A house on a hill with a pool
Well this trailer stays wet and were swimmin' in debt
And you want me to go back to school

I bought these new heels, did my nails
Had my hair done just right
I thought this new dress was a sure bet
For romance tonight
Well it's perfectly clear, between the TV and beer
I won't get so much as a kiss
As I head for the door I turn around to be sure
Did I shave my legs for this?
Darlin did I shave my legs for this?

kd lang is a Canadian with great vocals. I'm guessing she wouldn't mind wearing CADPAT and boots, either!

Vets Dottir 09-12-06 23:33

Ooops ... sorry, that was just a short clip of the tune.

Now, back to the topic at hand, I'll start tossing in some names I know and you folks can tell me what you think of them as possibilities :)

Sarah MacGlaughlan (can't spell her name?)

Celine Dion (because her name was mentioned)

Jim Byrnes (I've met him. He's blues. I could probably connect through the grapevine)

Eva Avila ... the new Canadian Idol ... young but very versatile in talent, can sing anything it seems, and a looker too ;)

ooooooooooops ... gotta go Geoff blowing my mind on phone right now ...

Canadian Singer perhaps

I can think of someone who might be able to bridge the generations....a very powerful and talented female singer.

Alanis Morrisette

Alanis Morrisette

Numbr one requirement is that the singer MUST BE CANADIAN! :)

I'll have to find some of Alanis Morriset singing to remember her voice ;)

Thanks for taking part in this Mike!!!

Karmen

Vets Dottir 10-12-06 00:12

I just listened to some of her music clips and found her site

http://www.alanis.com/main.html

Many of her clips have the same sort of "sounds" ... my own personal tastes for something that I figure would sound good, would be cleaner sounds, especially vocals. I guess I'm a bit of a purist about voices :D

I think a lot of the older generations might be turned off by the music and sounds.

Personally I like her sounds and music, but not for some project like a special song and viseo that supports our troops.

Thats just my own tastes and opinions though :)

Karmen.

Alanis Morissette was born 1 June 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.
kd lang (AKA Kathryn Dawn Lang) was Born 2-Nov-1961 in Consort, Alberta, Canada.

Thanks Tony,

Alanis Morrisette has really neat sounds but she just doesn't fit my idea (vague though it is) of who would. She don't feel "right" to me for this. Like I said though, thats only my opinion., The majority chooses.

I LOVE KD Lang ... now don't you military types be taking that the wrong way now, ya hear! :D She has a lot of talent and a very purist voice.

I guess the other thing to think about when considering names is to know which side of the military support side of the fence they sit on. Although if the prson were known as anti-war but pro soldier and supportive of them ... now THAT would have a great influence!!! I'm a dreamer :)

Karmen.

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 10-12-06 00:29

What Karmen's not telling you is that she has a voice which can knock you dead.. I mean, our lady can SING. Forget all those other spoiled, overpaid wenches...

Mike Timoshyk 10-12-06 03:39

Suitable musical talent????

Anyone heard of Natalie McMaster....no doubt the east-coasters have.....

I listened, thanks Mike :) By the way, Geoff loves violins/fiddles and many things Celtic ... he'll enjoy listening from that link!

Track 10 is a sample of her voice, fiddles and celtic sounds cross "sounds" barriers for many these days and people of all ages and music-loving-types listen and enjoy it, and she would be a very attractive poster girl :)

K.

Karmen, I think we've found our girl, but you have to do some of the singing. Your voice really is quite remarkable you know.

They fought and some died for their homeland
They fought and some died now it’s our land
Look at his little child, there’s no fear in her eyes
Could he not show respect for other dads who have died?

Take two minutes, would you mind?
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls who went over
In peace may they rest, may we never forget why they died.
It’s a pittance of time

God forgive me for wanting to strike him
Give me strength so as not to be like him
My heart pounds in my breast, fingers pressed to my lips
My throat wants to bawl out, my tongue barely resists

But two minutes I will bide
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls who went over
In peace may they rest, may we never forget why they died.
It’s a pittance of time

Read the letters and poems of the heroes at home
They have casualties, battles, and fears of their own
There’s a price to be paid if you go, if you stay
Peace is fought for and won in numerous ways

Take two minutes would you mind?
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls all over
May we never forget our young become vets
At the end of the line it’s a pittance of time

It takes courage to fight in your own war
It takes courage to fight someone else’s war
Our peacekeepers tell of their own living hell
They bring hope to foreign lands that the hatemongers can’t kill.

Take two minutes, would you mind?
It’s a pittance of time
For the boys and the girls who go over
In peacetime our best still don battle dress
And lay their lives on the line.
It’s a pittance of time

In Peace may they rest, lest we forget why they died.
Take a pittance of time
