Syria ford ute
1 Attachment(s)
Some years ago I was chatting to a ex WW2 signals op on the 80 metre ham band . He mentioned that he was in Syria with the AIF during 1941 . His said his unit were issued with AWA 101 wireless sets . He kindly posted me this pic of his mate in front of their wireless van . The original pic was about postage stamp size , I scanned it . I have a few more somewhere .
It looks like a 1940 O1Y 1 Tonner with 17" wheels . The AIF seemed to prefer Fords as signals trucks . Faintly visible above the passenger side cab roof , is a whip antenna . He said his job was rebuilding the 6 Volt lead acid wireless batteries in the vehicles . Every 6 months , they would melt out the tar sealant and install new plates and add new acid . He said he used a kero blow amp to melt the tar . He was quite a character , but I cannot recall his call sign .... Mike |
Nice photo, Mike:
Not that rare a vehicle but you do not usually see shots of them in the field such as yours. Lots of AWM beauty shots but not much real life ones. Cheers Bill |
