My Australian colleague is walking round the office with the flag draped over her shoulder and as always being unnaturally cheerfull.

Yep!

It was indeed Australia Day here today.

Have just returned from visiting some friends who became Aussies a couple of years ago, and driving along a high ridge some 30 ks from the city thrilled to the sight of distant fireworks over the Yarra River at the city.

Do you people have Citizenship Ceremonies (like we do here), big parades and everything like that, all across Australia for your Australia Day celebrations?

Citizenship

We sure do. The major one is in Canberra with the P.M. but there are others all around the country. People even fly flags which is fairly rare here compared with somewhere like the U.S.

Aussie of the year

The new Australian of the year , Tim Flannery , I went to school with and I also spent much time with him when we were teenagers . I could tell you all many episodes about the world famous climate scientist and biologist that would never make it into the media circus ride .

He had a keen interest in scale model aircraft kits , until he took up fossil collecting .

Cheers
