umm fine steel from china
|
Your supposed to lift the engine, not swing it left to right.
Hope nobody got hurt, and secondly, that the engine is OK. Personally, I have an OTC made engine crane, good to around 4000 pounds. You Americans should buy American products. Leave the CMPs for us Cdns, and the CHinese tools for them fellas. Remember the days when made in Taiwan or Mexico spelled Cra*? Nowadays it means relative quality. |
Dave,
That is the problem with those hoists with parallel legs, mine has splayed ones making it difficult to tip like that. Also with that weight the jib should be kept as short as possible. |
no one hurt, once it started to bend i just let it go. the only damage do far is the lower fan belt pully broke in half.
im going to weld the legs in place to keep this from hapening again. it wont fold up for storage, but i wont have to worry about getting squished as much. dave |
Greetings Dave!
Looks like a bit of a mishap there, thankfully no one was hurt. This does bring up an interesting subject though, and that is one of imported crap. Please excuse me for hi-jacking your post... My father taught me a long time ago that you get what you pay for and to always buy the best you can afford subject to the usage it gets. He was a long time toolmaker and knew quality as his job depended on it. Unfortunately these days, trying to even find decent quality tools and equipment is hard, especially with the likes of the big box stores like Wal-Mart etc who specialize in selling offshore junk at cheap prices. Of course I can't blame anyone, lest myself for taking the shortcut and buying a "bargain". With the high cost of living and low wages we suffer from here in Canada, not to mention being raped by the government and taxed on everything, how do we combat this situation? I for one, lost a very good job at an international company because they found it cheaper to make our product in India. My good friend suffered the same fate at the same company while his wife lost her job to a Chinese company. It is happening all over my friends. I would like to know, just when are our governments going to wake up and realize that sending all the jobs offshore is a ticking time bomb? Handing this much economic power over to the likes of communist governments like China or to third world dictatorships like Pakistan and India is simply insane! One day the Chinese will take over and the USA need never fire a shot, nor they as each day passes and they get their hooks more intertwined in the American economy. The day will come where there aren't any jobs here in the free world and hence no money. North America will become a third world country, crime ridden and over-run by foreigners with deep pockets. Left long enough, there won't be anyone to buy these foreign made products either from the likes of China and maybe, just maybe they'll come looking to take what they want. Better brush up now on your Mandarin. Take no offense Dave, as I do understand your purchase. I too have foreign made junk and I cringe whenever I need to buy something and its got a Made in China label. Just a little food for thought here... Buy Canadian! (or American)! |

Going along with your hijacking of the thread :D , just replace Muslim with Mandarin and you'll realize the real threat to the Western world. See you next week in Acton, weather permitting. |
ok then find me a N. american made hoist. :p

Trust me, Dave, this is not rocket science. Ya do what ya gotta do. Once you get by the initial trepidation, working with steel is FUN. It really is an art form in its own right. Grind your joins in 45 degree angles, clean them with a wire brush, and set your welder hot enough to 'blend' the two edges. Do it right and I guarantee your grandkids will still be using your stand. Carry on and report back, over. |

WELL said Chris, all the while the countries of the western world are run by clowns we head toward being the eventual circus. I think i must becoming paranoid these days as i seem to look at every thing i pick up to see if it reads made in bloody China or similer, already it can be seen that they are starting to play us at our own game and being masters of the copy syndrome it wont be long before even our breakfast wheatie bangs appear from this source. I do not mince my words when it comes to the way the British carry on with regards to this major problem i am now convinced that our industry or whats left of it can achieve high status in producing matchsticks even more concerning is what happens when we wake up and realise the cost of transferring all this back to where it belongs
Sorry guys prehaps this should have been ina different thread Les |
Dave, I apologize as i was not criticizing your choice; merely I was pointing out the ramifications of our consumer culture buying foreign made goods.
Les, of course I totally concur; at what point is it too late to "get back" into place what we had before. With the ongoing export of jobs to foreign markets with cheap labour, no employment rights, yet no human rights, it is a wonder when this will happen. I saw it with my own company. They had all kinds of foreigners working in our plant (apparently from other divisions) who were really keen on what we were doing. Of course they were! It was all an elaborate scheme to watch as we do and then steal it from under us. At some point, all our skilled labour will be gone, either emmigrated elsewhere or retired from their propective trades and we will be left with nothing other than to collect welfare cheques and go shopping at Wal-Mart... :dh: |
While I'm on a roll here... let's take Jon's comment and pick on the Muslims too.
We all know that the world runs on oil. Without it we're in big trouble. Probably the only reason we actually deal with Muslims anyhow as they have nothing else the world wants or needs, aside from some figs and dates. Eventually we are going to run out, and that is why I truly believe that r&d in alternative energy sources such as biodiesel and ethanol fuel types is so important. Mateer of fact, BP Oil is a world leader in R&D work on this very subject. They have identified the fact that they are in the oil business and to survive longterm they need to look at the future. They have gone so far as to change their slogan to Beyond Petroleum. Wouldn't it be nice to tell the Muslim world where to go? Keep you oil, we don't need it. Your empires can sit and go dormant in the desert and we don't care... and BTW, no, the doors are closed as we don't want your people either:p |
hi folks.....i guess i'll chime in here too....... you always hear big corporations and governments complaining that we have a shortage of trades persons, bla, bla, bla...so i ask, if there is such a shortage nation wide, then where is all the work?? many of the people in my trade have headed for alberta, while the rest of us who stayed put head for the E.I. line. apparently there are huge factories in the manufacturing sector (atlantic) that have to farm out work to other countries because they can't find the people.....funny, first i have heard of it, smells fishy, could it be that it is cheaper for them to get work done offshore and they are just covering their ass? i have come to the realization that unless one wants to go to alberta, one may as well put on a suit and work at a call center......ever see the movie the full monty?
as for bio diesel, i was watching a documentary on cbs about how willie nelson set up a refinery and markets bio diesel fuel under the name bio willie. they use cotton seeds for their oil, and it gives the farmers a second crop. there is a guy down here that runs his jetta diesel on canola oil with no problems. :) mike |
Our greatest shame is perhaps that we refuse to accredit trained folks from afar (anyone from carpenters to doctors) without 'Canadian training'. It's idiotic; we let them in then make them drive cabs on the midnight shift, when they could be employing their skills in their chosen trades, to the advantage of all of us.
I have a distinct feeling that the West will break before Quebec. That would be the ultimate irony, but not surprising. BTW, my company's call center is now in India. That should tell you something, and it's nothing against East Indians. Our world is slowly going nuts. Quote:

Same here, Mike... I haven't had a family doctor here since mine retired due to work-induced ill-health about nine years ago. Luckily, I've used the same walk-in clinic since and they're very good, but while they have my complete history on-file, it's not the same. All the same, they've had occasion to plug me into their machines instantaneously then call an ambulance to ensure I didn't drop on the spot. Shouldn't be this way, though.
BTW, you Aussies, that was a long while back, no worries now, mates. I'm now 54 years young and good-to-go! :) Let's understand one thing here on MLU, though, for the record... I'm not opposed to immigration. Of the good friends I have at work, two are East Indian and one is black. In addition, I share outside smoking-space with a West Indian lady who numbers amongst the warmest-hearted women I've ever met. She's married, so don't get carried away, but I DO treasure her friendship. Having said all this, I really do think that Trudeau's concept of centralised Ottawa-based power backfired badly. We really are a huge country of 11 separate mini-nations, with subunits within, and that DOES need to be recognized and addressed. I think Harper knows this but it's going to be a tough haul for him. But it's a reality which WILL ultimately have to be attended-to. I don't envy him his task, but I don't think anyone else can do it and maintain the integrity of the nation. [/sermon] |
PS:
Just to get this thread back on track, Dave, you need a good welder to build you a proper engine hoist. Bruce or I could do it for you if we were anywhere close, but you're on your own here.
Keep us posted. |
Geoff, back to your comment regarding the call center for your company being located in India...
Kinda ironic that a huge COMMUNICATION company like Bell Telephone, tenders off their call center needs to an offshore company where the heavily accented people barely speak English. What's up with that??? Seems to me that we always get ripped off on phone rates while the company saves money by hiring foreigners to do what our citizens should be doing. Just one more way companies line their pockets at the expense of our nation. Shame on Bell and all the companies out there just like them! And, the next time a call center person calls and asks for Mr Wickery, Vikilly or anything other than my name I'm going to quit using the phone altogether and go back to writing letters... sorry Geoff, I don't mean to insult your vocation. |
i did have a gantry made and use that on my carrier asembly line :D . just didnt have anyone to help me move it to pull the CCKW motor.
|
Dave, please accept my sincerest apologies for setting your post off on a tangent! :salute: :p

Dave, I hate to buy anything from China but if you price steel, a hydraulic cylinder and four casters, even without your time, the Chinese hoist is cheaper.
Chris, I agree 100%. Oshawa has one of the top 5 Wally Worlds in Canada. Guess why? All the high price CAW Union members are trying to save a buck. Go figure! When I went to buy a new cordless drill for the garage I was adamant that I wouldn't by anything Chinese. I looked at Makita because there is a repair facility in Whitby. On the side of the drill it says " Makita Corporation- Ashai Japan". Great, Japanese and not Chinese. When I got back to the garage a closer inspection revealed the dreaded Made in China. You can't win. :bang: Barry |
Well past time for Ottawa to WAKE UP ...
Gents, consider if you will, the millions upon millions of litres of fresh water that flow out of Canada's rivers everyday. Wasted as it mixes into three salty oceans.
What does most of the muslim (and a majority of the rest of the) world desperately need ? I'll bet that more clean water is near the top of their lists. And amazingly enough, they seem to have LOTS of oil/gas to trade for it. Even our southern neighbour, the good old USofA wants it. So just what is Canda doing to harvest this wonderful, clean, constantly replenished, natural resourse ? And think of all of the jobs that would go with it ! Just what you would expect from Ottawa (no matter which party is in power), NOTHING AT ALL ! Yes, I realize that fresh water harvesting needs to be done with some care to protect salmon and other marine estuary wildlife etc. but where else in the world would people just let such "liquid gold" run away down the drains ? Except for dumping our waste into rivers upstream so that other Canadians can draw out their own drinking water, further downstream. "Only in Canada" ... as the saying goes. |
Fresh Water....
If the Liberals and Taliban Jack don't give it all away, the Middle East will pay us well for out fresh water ,if they want it..
The Americans will come and take it..if THEY want it.. :dh: :bang: :remember :support |
we dont take things, we trade you left wingers and draft dodgers for them :D

owwwww no you didnt say anything about NCOs did ya????
that is sooooo west piont. :teach: i cant tell you how many officers i saw replacing the air in tires so they could put the proper summer vrs winter air in them. or how we had a officer jump up and down on the rear of a M3 brad to check out to see if the shocks were in working order :yappy: |
David, you can be a cheeky sod at times, but I'll grant some of your points... I served with and over some real winners... always got along best with the Warrants, who had been in long enough to know not to sauce me, yet knew how far they could push. The Army can't live without 'em! :)
PS: I was a Sergeant once, so piss off... :p Quote:

LOL :yappy:
i am just messing with ya. we all have to be able to take and give a good poke from time to time. i just love the stupid games officers play to each other. in ADA we had the newest officer had to carry a teddy bear around with him all day in the proper uniform (PTs, CAMMO, web gear etc....) it was soooo stupid. i like to think of officers as cars i guess, you have a LOT of lemmons but once in a while after afew years you get a clasic. but not too often. :fry: dave |
