Amphibian

I have started wading through more old regos files to see if I can find any more demobbed CMPs for my database. I found a 1951-registered GMC "Amphibian", i.e. DUKW-353. I wondered how long these served with the British after the war? I know that GM Limited urgently refurbished three for the MofS in 1947, and this suggests that they were in demand..perhaps in the Far East?

David,

At least until a few years ago (and may still today even), the British Marines used a number of DUKWs at their amphibous training facilities at Instow(?).

Here

The army here or it may have been the CMF ( army reserve ) ,were using them into the early 1960's .

There was a tragic accident involving a DUKW in the early 1960's , down near the entrance to Port Phillip bay in Victoria , The Rip . A DUKW sank and people drowned , it may have been in army service at the time , from memory , I think it was .

Nice one!

Not taken in Little Venice, London was it?

I wondered whether it was the early Fifties flood disaster?
