Fuel Tanker
I came across a bulk fuel tank that has quite a military look about it but I didn't have my camera with me. It's a three compartment tank with a storage compartment at the rear and it looks like a water buffalo tank but it seems to be a couple of feet longer. I'd say it would hold about 150 gallons total. The rear doors are the same shape as on the CMP water tankers. It has plank walkways on either side with a pipe railing around them. It looks like it would be WW2 era. Did any army vehicles use such a tank and if so does anybody have any pix? Any pix I have are 60 cwt which is too big.

Only seen one.....
Hi David
Some years ago the Templeton float plane airport.....just a few miles from the Gatineau (Potter/Spitfire) airport had a cab 13 fuel truck just like you describe and very similar in appearance ans size as a water truck. The ywould drive the cab 13 down the concrete ramp and while sitting in a few feet of water would refuel float planes.... the only thing not original was a fuel meter counter... the whole thing was painted flat black. Never bothered with pictures then...doubt if it still exists. BooB |

It's an oval tank that's 30" high and 40" wide. With the rear storage compartment it's 97" long which makes it too long for a 15 cwt. It holds 250 gallons

Probably civvy....
Looks too long for the C15a frame I had seen......
...seems to me the fancy railing on the side platforms are too jazzy for a military model...... but sure would look good on a 1930 truck...... No tags to speak of I suppose..... Bob C. |
looks similar to the C60X tankers that Euan posted except for the doors being on the end rather then the side and at the front.
Cheers Cliff :) |
A big "if"
If the wheel in the picture is associated to the tank, and if the tank wasn't transferred from one vehicle to another. The wheel looks civilian or at best MCP rather than CMP.
200 gallon water tank for 15cwt had tank length 81" including stores compartment. 350 gallon water tank for 60cwt CMP had tank length 122.25" including stores compartment. 450 gallon water tank for 60cwt Dodge had tank length 130" including stores compartment. 800 gallon petrol tank length isn't known but is stated as 2 comparment which doesn't match the 3 hatches in the photo. |
That's an ordinary 1/2 ton wheel but I'm not sure what it was used for. Maybe coiling hose around? The writing on the side of the tank says Premiere Gasolines. Like Bob says those railings are pretty fancy for the army. The caps on the railing corners are the shape of trailer balls but made for the job.
A friend in town has a small museum with a B A bulk station and a 1942 GMC 1 1/2 ton delivery truck with no tank so I'll let him go get it.The tank is the perfect length for it. |
