Trivia of General Interest...Maybe.
 

We all know that CMPs were, for the most part, built in Windsor and Oshawa. But what of all the other associated things we are interested in, where were they built? What say we start a list of sorts. I'll start with;

Lee Enfields-Long Branch-Toronto
Grenades- Frost and Woods- Smiths Falls
Helmets- Canadian Lamp Company-Windsor

You get the idea.

Long Branch was the location, not the company. Back then it wasn't part of Toronto either.

And some Australian oddities:

Wire cutters: H V McKay and Co, Sunshine, Vic

No2 Mk1* .38 Revolvers: Howard Auto Cultivators, Northmead, Sydney, NSW.

1" Signal Flare pistol: Colonial Sugar Refineries (CSR), Pyrmont, Sydney, NSW.

Owen SMG: Lysaghts, Port Kembla NSW

Daylight Signalling Lamps: Lawrence and Hanson, Sydney, NSW

All of these companies are still in business in their original form, but may have been absorbed into larger conglomerates. Looking at them today, you wouldn't know of their wartime contributions.

Inglis also made the Boys rifle, and the polsten AA gun, along with the Browning aircraft .303 machine gun.

It was just the John Inglis Company. They were known for making boilers, boiler plate, man-hole covers, and other heavy metal stuff. They didn't get into household appliances until after WWII.

Let's not overlook Regina Industries which produced 6-pdrs
Sorel Industries which produced 25-pdrs
Montreal Locomotive Works - Ram, Grizzly, Skink
Research Enterpise Ltd of Leaside Ontario - Optics
The GM plant in Walkerville (name escapes me) - .50 cal MG
and the list goes on....

Addison Industries, Toronto - wireless set 58
RCA(Montreal), Northern Electric,Canadian Marconi - wireless sets 19,22,29,52,etc.
Rogers Majestic - wireless set 27

in 1942 production of home entertainment products ceased and all production went to the war effort.

Correcton:...Canadian Arsenals Limited, located west of the Etobicoke Creek in what was properly known as Lakeview, technically and geographically just a smidgen from the village of Long Branch, q.v. via search engine.

New correction. Small Arms Ltd., is correct. Canadian Arsenals Ltd., is the post-war creation that brought together a number of the different war-time businesses and skills. This Crown Corporation inherited the military optics of REL, the small arms manufacturing equipment of John Inglis and Small Arms Ltd. , and a number of others. However, they did not exist until 1 January 1946 (from memory - I will have to look this up in my papers).

Anyway, the expression "Long Branch" surely stirs evocative reaction from anyone who lurks herein, or without.
