Land Rover 101 FC

Ok, i'm trying to get a better picture of the 101 FC Land Rovers that remain in Australia.

Naturally, some vehicles are Imported vehicles from other parts of the world, however i'm more interested in the 58 vehicles that were provided to the Australian Army by BAC for use with the Rapier Missle systems.

Now I know most on here don't have Land Rovers, however many of you are in local clubs who have members that own 101s.

So what i'm after is chassis numbers and Australian Army Registration Numbers (if the owners know them).

This is what I have so far, pretty poor considering how few vehicles were used. Any other info or photos of them in service would also be appreciated.

58???? Where'd you get that number???

Try Thirty something.

Pedr

PM me for details of an authority in this country on this subject.

Thirty something over the 3 units that used them??

I've already got records of 35 sold at auction (If only I had their specifics)

I'd best send a PM ;)

This belongs to the person that I will put you in contact with. It's very original including sankey trailer. All 101's where in SA serving with 110th Air Defence, 16th independant artillery based in Woodside South Australia.

The 101's came as part of the kit with the Rapier SAM Missile systems purchased from British Aerospace. These have now been removed from service.

16 Air Defence Regiment were the primary users towing Rapier units as far as I know, but I also have photos of units belonging to the RAEME Training Center and School of Artillery

I presume to train people to fix them, and tow guns with them, and I guess drive them as well.

Would imagine that they were all a part of the thirty something that came with the Rapiers. As usual I am aware that as the Rapiers started to go US. and parts were ratted to maintain the remainder, things like the tractors and trailers would have been moved about to other units. It would make sense that the school of Arty and RAEME had them for training.

Oh, and I never quantified the 58 vehicles. It was just what REMLR said, as well as another source I found, however it also matches the number of RHD export vehicles delivered to BAC.

Auction

When they were sold at auction in South Aust., A Victorian ( no names here ), travelled over and bought the best of them , including the spares , for peanuts . On the auction day , apparently, little interest was shown in them by the public and they literally went for a 'song '.

Among the spares, were boxed/crated NOS rear bodies that were sold for ridiculous small prices as nobody wanted them . Where was the SAMVCC club , sleeping ! I perused all the spares , stored in Melbourne years ago , quite a haul of stuff .

Probably standing in a circle playing with their...." My ding-a-ling, my ding-a-ling, I want to play with my ding-a-ling."

At least that's how I think the song goes.

Too busy playing politics to bother with restoration or preservation of MV's

:p

I wish i'd been there mike.

It was a different story at an auction in NSW where the 101's sold for $9000 to $12000, however I have heard of one that was passed in being sold at an offer of about $2500

I mean that's about what I paid for my series 3!!!

Palindromic and matching wheelbases

This is one LR I would seriously consider trading up to from my 109 - it would make an excellent companion and tow vehicle for my HUP - both 101" cabovers, how cool would that be. Scarce in Canada, however.

LR 101

RAEME Training Centre and the School of Artillery had 101 Land Rovers on strength since the introduction of the Rapier Missile system into the Army. If I remember correctly, both units had two on strength each attached to the Air Defence Wing at Scool of Arty and Guided Weapons Section at RTC.
These were for training purposes in deployment etc of the weapons systems.
The two variants on issue to all three units were the FUV (Fire Unit Vehicle) and the DSV (Detachment Support Vehicle if I remember correctly. I was posted to 16 AD for a few years in the WKSP and vividly remember the things as a huge maintenance liability. I was there for the change over to the 6x6 LR and the diesel engine was the best thing that ever happened there.....

phoenix 11-09-07 04:11

That makes more sense than the initial information that I was given of just 4 vehicles to school of artillery, especially as I have a photo of one in RAEME markings.

Got any more information on the three variants that the army used?? I was aware of 3 variants, but not their differences or names.

LR 101

$29,000 It's a Land Rover. That would make it $29,010 more than it's worth

Tell him he's dreaming

This bloke reckons there only two in Australia. What about all the 101's that the Army had to tow the Rapiers around with?

Cheers
Rod

Recently a lot of land rover things have become "Rare" or "unique" like many military vehicle parts, and the price bumped u;.

For that price you could buy a mint condition one in the UK, import it and still have spare change!!!

That price is insane, and I know of at least 4 others in person apart from this one, more if I put my mind to it ;)

Ryan 17-09-07 09:54
