Found a stray Canadian!!

On my way home last night, I found a Stray Canadian with family here in Limavady. Being inquisitive (a nosy b!""£r in other words), I decided to investigate this appearance of a rare species in this area.

Seriously though, they are on a world tour and were looking for a place to park up for the night. Where they were thinking about would not have been conducive to a good nights rest, the local "misunderstood youth" of the area would probably have performed "Riverdance" on the roof of the camper. My wife and I thought that it was not a good idea.

So, at my wife's suggestion, they were gently sheperded up to my driveway for the night, and must be getting a good rest as it is just after 9.15 am (B.S.T.) and there is no sign of life yet. We both felt happier knowing that a visitor to the Province would not be getting any hassle for at least one night

In case anyone on the Forum knows of them, they are the Reid (Read?) family - Mike, Nancy, Jade, and Dylan from Whitehorse, Yukon. Mike works in Forestry and Nancy is an electrician, the two children are of school age. They bought themselves the camper in Holland and are using it to travel around.

My wife and I are going to take them to a local viewing point, not far from here and then point them in the general direction of where they want to go (wherever that may be!).

Paul.

Paul, that was a very kind and proper thing to do, and I salute for it! I, too, have had that unique 'old world' courtesy shown me in past for which I was profoundly grateful; unfortunately, it seems a rare bird these days, anywhere.

:salute:

PS: I don't happen to know these people, but then again, there are over 30 million of us! :D

Re:- Stray Canadian

Than k you for your kind comments Geoff, they are appreciated.

There is a saying here - "What goes around, comes around" and it can be read in a number of ways.

I too have been in receipt of "old world" courtesy as you put it, and was also grateful for it.

The family got themselves under way after 10.00 am and we managed to get them up to the viewing point before the weather closed in again (Summer?? - we have not had one this year yet, in comparison to last year). My wife and I then took them down on to what we call the Coast Road, and bid them farewell.

They are here in Northern Ireland for another few days and are then heading back to the mainland and from there - who knows? Mike did say that they were thinking of going back to France and to the Somme. I pointed him in the general direction of Albert and Bapume (I was there 2 years ago) and a Canadian memorial there.

It also turns out that one of his ancestors was lost with HMS Hood. He did give me the name, but it escapes me for the time being.

Here is hoping that they successfully complete their travels and return home safely.

Paul.

P.S. The surname is spelt Reed. If anyone does know of them, I will pass any messages onto them. Please contact me via PM.

Re:- Stray Canadians

Just an update.

The family are now in the Dunkirk area, where the two "sprogs" (no insult intended) are settled for a time.

I have received a couple of very nice e-mails from them, and all seems well with them.

They left here in Northern Ireland after visiting the "Big Smoke" (Belfast) and journeyed through Scotland, eventually reaching Dover and crossing to France.

Mike did express some interest in Military History, so I might just suggest a visit to the Dieppe and Normandy areas, although he has probably already considered that.

Paul.

P.S. Geoff, I have just picked up on something in your message on this post :)

Seeing as there is only about 33 million of you in an area that is about 35 times bigger than the UK where we have approaching 61 million, may we "re-direct" some of our immigrants in your direction? (Taking cover/evasive action from incoming now, Sir  )

Irish Immigrants.....

Paul...
Canada is screaming for all kinds of trades people..truck drivers...heavy equipment operators..engineers...
The Irish,Scots,English and many other European and Slavik peoples,as well as the Norse built Canada in what it is today..
We are all immigrants...some just more senior than others..
Google up jobs in Alberta...take your pick..They are so desparate they pay your way..help you immigrate and treat you great..Employers are so afraid of loosing good trained employees that they really look after them/
I just got back from Alberta this summer and there was 12 year old kids working in take outs and hotels ...
They were advertising bonus and finders fees ,on signs out side businesses ,One I saw was $1500.00 as a finders fee for good employee..
Another was outside an ice cream bar for a counter person..scooping ice cream...$15.00 an hour to start..$700.00 Bonus for signing up..
And they were opening at noon and closing at 10.00 at night because they didn't have enough employees to extend any hours..
So come on over...bring these guys with you and drop them off in Ottawa...we have a permanent gig for them at Grace O'Mallys pub...

Re:- Immigrants (not necessarily Irish)

Just poking my head above the parapet to see if the incoming has ceased!!!

Seriously though, and I know the spirit of the forums can go a little awry at times, there was no offence meant by my comment, and I apologise if there was any taken.

As you state Alex Canada, and a number of other countries, would not be where they are today if it was not for those who made the decision to move countries and make the best of it.

As it is here in Northern Ireland, and most other parts of the UK, if it was not for the Phillipina nurses the hospitals would be even more short staffed than they are; Polish construction workers are supplementing our own workforce; many other nations workers are doing the same.

Paul.

Sorry mate, I wasn't pouting... actually, I've been quite busy of late with other things and missed your comment altogether! :o

Anyway, no offence taken - hell, you might as well send us all the ones you don't want, seems everybody else does... and we take 'em, because they all vote Liberal! :rolleyes
