Look at the picture below. Although it looks like a bog standard jeep, it has been fitted with what we tend to call a CMP mirror. I assume this was probably due to the fact that for the Canadian military these rectangular mirrors were more plentiful in the supply system than the round US ones?

General Crerar had one on his jeep, too. . .

The DUKW in the Base Borden museum also has a CMP mirror on it. Whatever was handy on the shelf I guess.

I have seen a few photos in the archives with CMP Mirrors.

I have placed one of these on my GPW and it actually gives a better rear and side view due to its convex glass than the standard round mirror.

These could have been changed as a replacement or due to its better visibility.

I find it does not bounce around as much as well.

General Crerar's jeep flag
 

As a point of interest, I have one of General Crerar's staff car flags as shown in the photo from earlier in this posting - it denotes the General Officer Commanding, First Canadian Army.

Mine may well be the one in the photo as it was given to me by Finlay Morrison, his ADC. The "Crerar Trailer" at the Canadian War Museum was Finlay's office.

He had a fancier flag with tassels and gold maple leaf (instead of yellow) for his staff cars. Post-war he used a different design flag in Canada with a different appointment.

In my collection I have almost all of the WWII Canadian staff car flags and some from from post-war.

Some (most?) division commanders customised their swallow-tails because officially were all the same (red with gold/yellow maple leaf). The British Div Comdrs did the same. I'm still looking for these customized staff car flags.
