Nigel Ward and his BSA. Nigel and his wife Leisa were generous enough to allow me to ride it around the show a number of times over the weekend. I don't know if I would trust me!!

I'm not sure Keith. Tony might know. I'm sure he will post many more photos when he gets home tomorrow.

You mean you chased him with the Blitz? Could he outrun you in second gear? :p

grant fincher 21-10-07 11:58

I meant a "ride" around the oval. I'm built like Tony and I haven't run anywhere since 1968.

I don't think it is the one from dubbo, It was at our swap about 3 years ago in unfinished condition and is owned by Darren Addot from Toowoomba.
It sure is a beut :thup2:
It won best 1/2 ton at the show, good effort against 5 restored 1/2 ton dodges.
It was an awsome show and only getting bigger and better!

Checked my letterbox today, and the C15A's not there. Did you put on enough stamps? :D

It was indeed great to catch up with some Forum Members and Lurkers. Tom, if you are reading this, please sign up and tell us about your other rarity!

Having only seen pics before of the work done on Grant's F60S, it was quite impressive up close, naturally too the work on Nigel and Leisa's C15. Congrats to yourselves and Phil for a great team effort.

Darren Abbot is a forum member and has discussed his vehicle before, so this is NOT the Dubbo one. I will put up some other pics in the C8s in Australia thread.

As an 8cwt truck, Darren was lucky it was not judged alongside the Jeeps!

OK, so it's not CMP, not even military, but perhaps we could stretch the truth a little and suggest it's ex-RAAF?

This has to be the most gob-smackingly bizarre (but in a good way!!) vehicle I have had the pleasure to covet madly. It would be the right sort of vehicle to attract attention at an Airshow! Not only is it a unique vehicle, it is also vintage, having been built in 1950 by the late Bill Chater.

It is built on a '40s vintage International KB-5 truck, it is the front fuselage of an Ex-Netherlands East Indies Navy, then Ex-KLM C47 Dakota. It is fully road registered and travels about as a camper van and for display events.

With Kitchenette facilities, table and lounge, and bunk beds it is ideal for that quiet uninterrupted holiday away (if you don't mind being asked questions everywhere you go!). Just mind your head as you board!
Fasten your seatbelt and extinguish your cigarettes. The Stewardess will attend to you shortly.

Oh, and if you think a 40s-era 3 ton truck with a 30 odd foot long body would be slow and cumbersome on the road, this sleek stylish example is fitted with mounting points for JATO Rockets! (Who says he doesn't have a sense of humour?) Disturbingly, this is VERY close to the fuel filler, which I don't think would be very safe. Frankly, I don't know how it would pass rego like that, but this IS Queensland!

Geoff Winnington-Ball (RIP) 22-10-07 14:49

Bloody hell... if that isn't the most bizarre thing I've ever seen!!!

While 4 of the Dodges were US made, 1 had WD axles and wheels and may have been a Canadian T212, if the number plate is anything to go by?

Mike Kelly wrote: "The T212 replica was built by Warren Kerle in Brisbane, he began with a chassis which he thinks is from a T212 . He then found a cab from a T110 Canadian 3 tonner and axles from the U.S. 1/2 ton WC series. He made up the 6 stud hubs, and used wheels from a C8AX CMP."

Gob-smackingly bizarre it is - but then again, it must be Australian! :D
I like the way the Australians preserve our aircraft. There's also an ex-Netherlands Catalina preserved as a house boat.
Any chance on listing the Dakaota's tail number / registration details?

According to the DC3 Register, it is Construction Number 13210, USAAF No 42-93312, and NEI No W-12

The DC3 Register also lists another fuselage mounted on a Chev truck. Now that's just too weird!

This source lists: "USAAF 93312 (c/n 13210) to MLD (Marine Luchtvaard Dienst--Dutch Navy) as Q-12". I'll see if I can dig up more info.

I remember seeing a similarly converted Dakota on a TV show, ´t was in America of course. . .

The DC3 on the Chev is in Melbourne. I have photo's somewhere of it. I'll dig them up and post. The truck is a Lend-lease Chev 1942.

Hi Rick,

That sounds like this one I saw while on the 1992 Variety Club Bash from Sydney to Ayers Rock, crewed by members of the Royal Australian Navy, it was also taking part. I thought we were slow, but we never saw them during the day after starting out and they were usually last ones in. It must have been a pig to drive through the bush and desert tracks. I looked in it and the instrument panel was a bit of plywood to the side of the driver!

lynx42 31-10-07 00:09

Hi Richard ,
Yes, thats the one. It was at a service station in Melbourne for a bit of work a few years ago. Would love to have it in the collection. Regards Rick

photos soon.

In addition Tony´s link, this Dutch webpage provided some more information:
Quote:

After serving in NW Europe, USAAF serial 42-93312 c/n 13210 was one of several hundred C-47’s present at Manilla in the Philippines shortly before the end of war. The Marine Luchtvaart Dienst (MLD, Royal Netherlands Naval Air Services) bought fifteen of these aircraft (at probably scrap value) which were registered Q-1 to Q-15 (later renumbered to W-1 to W-15). Between December 1945 and February 1946 they were ferried from Manilla to Sydney by MLD pilots to reinforce the Navy Detachment in Australia.
During a flight on 26 March 1947 from Sydney to Jakarta, Indonesia, Q-12 got into trouble after being hit by lightning over Katherine Gorge Wilderness. The electric systems went out of service, thus radio and navigation equipment were no longer available. The pilot decided to make an emergency landing with retracted landing gear. The six occupants and a dog exited the aircraft safely. But the damage to the three year old aircraft was considerable and it could not be flown out.
Q-12 was towed to the town of Katherine, and then on towards Darwin through a river bed and jungle. To enable this transport the wings were removed from the aircraft. It was transferred by ship from Darwin to Sydney.
Aeroflight lists the following details:
Quote:

16 C-47A aircraft delivered from USAAF 22 December 1945 to 29 April 1946. Used as cargo transport. First fifteen serialled Q-1 to Q-15, but reserialled 23-1 to 23-15 in February 1946, and 23-16 added. Used by 321 sqn in NEI (Indonesia). Most transferred to Indonesian AF ownership by 15 December 1950.

Serial | c/no. | Prev. Identity | Delivered | Fate/Notes
Q-12 | 13210 | 42-93312 | 23 Apr 1946 | later 23-12, accident Port Darwin 26 Mar 1947
