This seems to be just a case of following a long tradition.
My grandfather who was a veterinary officer in the 1914 - 18 war with Royal Artillery batteries said that adjacent Australian units would often steal horses from British units, or more cleverly swap ill or damaged horses for better ones tied up over night in the lines.
In the morning the troopers would arrive to find a broken down horse where the previous night a good one had been tied up.
