I can't say that there was never a CMP made with both brake and tail lights on each side, but I can say that I haven't seen one that had them that I could be 100% sure had never been modified since it left the factory. It would have been easy to exchange the mounting plate with one light for one with two lights and add a length of wire to make a safety addition to have tail and brake lights on each side. Once you've done this it shouldn't be hard to imagine using some of the bulbs as signals by adding a bit more wire and the control.
Even though having only the original lights may be legal, I suggest that anyone driving their CMP on today's roads should consider having larger, brighter tail lights, you should make them removable for shows so that people can see just how much standards have changed.
