Rick..Being a mechanic for the past 50 years I have had my share of black nails and barked knuckles,from slipped wrenches(especially on those old flat head Ford pressure plate bolts,in confined spaces,and when the wrench slips the knuckles pay the price,usually on the chewed up ring gear teeth..)..
The difference in your black nail and mine was that I always burnt or drilled a relief hole in the black nail to release the blood from under the nail..
Even carefully cut a slit in my nail one time with my jack knife to relieve the pressure..
Use a tiny drill bit as a thumb drill and drill a little hole in the top of your finger nail..The pain relief is instantaneous..
