The answer is to put an old fashioned globe in the circuit (hide it up under the dash). If you use a double contact stop/tail globe you only need one. Just solder (or use an old original tail light socket with wires) one filament in to each of the left and right flasher circuits. Of course you can use a separate single globe for each circuit.
You can also put a small resistor in series with the circuit
