Going from what I have seen in India/Nepal this is more than likely to be a souvenir. If you look at any issue kukris or working kukris which the locals still use they are far more robust. I don't think your item would stand up to serious wood chopping (or head lopping!)

It is still a nice relic of the era and looks to be in excellent condition.
