To make the threaded shaft, I would suggest to buy some 5/8UNF threaded rod and some nuts and they should be 8.8/s (High Tensile). I would thread 3 nuts onto the thread so they just touch each other and weld them all together. It would pay to bevel all joints so you get a good deep weld all around. After they're all welded you can unscrew them and put them in a lathe and turn them down so they slide into the tube nicely. Put the threaded rod into the nuts 2 or 3 threads, cover the thread with a piece of tube so you don't damage the thread when you weld the threaded rod to the nuts. Mind you, this is just an alternative if you don't want to have that part made at a engineering shop or machine the whole part. You may be able to buy extended nuts to do the job.
